Express Outreach Award Highlights: Integrating Patient-Centered Health Information into the Patient Centered Medical Home

Clinicians are integrating iPads into their practice of medicine at a dizzying rate. Often the reason is an intention to improve efforts at patient education. In 2012, the University of Nevada Savitt Medical Library received an Express Outreach Award from NN/LM PSR, for a project to explore the potential of iPads in patient education efforts. Our project placed iPads in several clinical exam rooms for both clinician and patient use. We also created a patient-centered information portal optimized for iPad viewing, to facilitate access to key educational content. We hoped to see to what degree tablet computers were productive in fostering better doctor-patient communication and patient self-care, and whether having a patient-centered website would contribute to more productive tablet use. Highlights of Information Services Outreach for Rural and Frontier Nevada in 2012-2013!

The title of one of Bob Dylan’s lesser known songs, Too Much of Nothing, serves as an apt description for Nevada. For in much of the state, we have a whole lot of nothing! The major population centers of Las Vegas and Reno are dwarfed by vast tracts of nearly empty space. The isolation in these sparsely populated rural and frontier regions poses significant challenges for the health care providers working there, not the least of which is in navigating the information landscape to obtain reliable health information. Fortunately, in 2012, the Savitt Medical Library received a cooperative outreach award from NN/LM PSR to establish the part-time position of Health Outreach Librarian. During the past year this position played a key role in helping to mitigate the impact of geographic isolation of health care workers, by providing information services support and training. (more…)

Dear PubMed Sage!

Express Outreach Award Highlights: Bridging the Health Information Gap: Saturday Science Academy II and the Charles R. Drew University Health Sciences Library

by Delois C. Flowers, Outreach Librarian, and
Darlene Parker Kelly, Library Director
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Health Sciences Library
Los Angeles, CA

One of the joys of librarianship is helping to shape the future of young people, by introducing information resources that are reliable, credible, and authoritative. The primary goal of our NN/LM PSR Express Outreach Award project, Bridging the Health Information Gap: Saturday Science Academy II and the Charles R. Drew University Health Sciences Library, was to promote the awareness and use of the National Library of Medicine’s consumer health resources to students, parents, and teachers. Our preliminary session began with the students of the Charles Drew University (CDU) Project Prep Program that is high school based, and attended by students as part of after-school initiatives promoting the health sciences. The training consists of students locating e-books, demonstrating the difference between Google and Google Scholar, and using MedlinePlus to identify at least two key resources that could be used to further their research interest.
