We are very grateful to NN/LM PSR for supporting a cooperative outreach award for Arizona. It is critical in our efforts to provide programs to a variety of audiences in Arizona and to respond to needs in a timely manner. Our goals for Arizona are to improve health literacy and access to accurate health information statewide. We aim to facilitate access to high quality, current, and reliable health information through training, consultation, and collaboration. Specifically we specialize in presenting training and workshops around the state that assist librarians, health professionals, K-12 students, and members of the public become more effective users of the Internet and electronic resources. by Naomi C. Broering, MLIS, MA, FMLA
Dean of Libraries
Pacific College of Oriental Medicine

Typically, disasters strike when least expected and they surprise everyone! The greatest disaster risks in Arizona, California, and Nevada are wildfires, earthquakes, chemical or radiation hazards, terrorism, and disease epidemics, such as influenza. Access to immediate health information is critical and essential in times of crisis; and provision of recovery services directly affects people in need. The Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) Library wanted to develop a community emergency outreach service, and we began preparations by attending two MLA CE classes on Disaster Health Information. Based on this instruction, new knowledge and skills, plus our teaching experience, we then submitted an NN/LM PSR Express Outreach Award proposal. (more…)

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) has organized an annual summit on translational bioinformatics (TBI) since 2008. I was fortunate to attend the 2013 Summit, which took place in San Francisco, CA, on March 18-20, 2013. This was made possible by an NN/LM PSR Professional Development Award, that supports hospital librarians in attending continuing education workshops and conferences.
