Network Members in the Spotlight!
We would like to recognize the following network members by highlighting their accomplishments, promotions, awards, new positions and departures. We welcome your submissions for possible future announcements!
Sue Espe MLIS, AHIP, will start on February 4, 2013, as Library Director at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona. She was previously the Medical Librarian at Banner Gateway Medical Center and Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Evans Whitaker will begin work on February 4, 2013, as an Associate Librarian at the UCSF Kalmanovitz Library and Center for Knowledge Management. After 20 years as a family medicine doctor in Aptos, CA, he left medical practice, completed library school at San Jose State, and was hired as a medical librarian by USC Norris Medical Library. His three years at USC were marked by extraordinary colleagues, and rapid growth in his knowledge and skills as a librarian and as an instructor. A serious illness in his family drew him home to Santa Cruz County, where he worked for the past two years as a hospital librarian, at the same hospital where he admitted his patients. The experiences at Dominican Hospital Santa Cruz as a solo librarian introduced him to many other facets of librarianship. He is excited to return to an academic medical library setting!
Tina Takamoto, MLS, departed from the Hawaii Medical Library (HML) at Queen’s Medical Center, Honolulu, in November, 2012. During her career as an HML librarian, Tina made significant contributions initially as a consumer health librarian and, in the past several years, working diligently on the transformation and relocation of HML.
Carolyn Ching Dennison, joined the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library, as a Science & Technology Reference Librarian in late August 2011. Her responsibilities include serving as the Library’s subject liaison to the University’s School of Nursing & Dental Health. She was previously a reference librarian at The Queen’s Medical Center, Hawaii Medical Library.
Brett VanBenschoten recently went from finding articles for doctors to teaching them and helping them research and publish. As the new Research Librarian at the Western University of Health Sciences, in Pomona, CA, he assists faculty and students on research needs from inception to publication, with a focus on Open Access and author rights. He also provides instruction on issues ranging from information literacy, PowerPoint, public speaking, PubMed, and other databases.
Janet Bruman, MLS, medical librarian since 1996 at Natividad Medical Center, Salinas, CA, retired in December 2012. Janet’s work in medical libraries began at UCLA in 1970, and continued as class instructor for BRS/Medline and OnTyme in the 1980s.
Susan Efteland, Librarian at the VA West Los Angeles Healthcare Center, retired on December 31, 2012. She volunteers on a part-time basis at the facility.
Hal Bright is the new Electronic Services Librarian at A.T. Still Memorial Library, Mesa, AZ.
Rikke Ogawa has a new functional title and new responsibilities at the UCLA Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library. On December 1, 2012, Rikke’s title became Resource, Instruction and Collection Services (RICS) Team Leader. In her new role, Rikke will supervise RICS librarians. By consolidating this reporting structure, it will be easier for RICS librarians to work together in meeting future challenges.
Shirley Maccabee, MLS, Librarian at John Muir Medical Center, Concord, CA, retired on December 12, 2012.
Rupa Chaobal is no longer the librarian at Washington Hospital Healthcare System in Fremont, CA. Lucy Hernandez has taken over DOCLINE responsibilities.
James Wiser, Assistant Director of the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC), has left his position, to accept new responsibilities at SAGE Publications, as Manager of Library Relations and Sales Support.
Greta E. Marlatt of the Naval Postgraduate School, Dudley Knox Library, in Monterey, CA, was one of 10 winners of the American Library Association 2012 “I Love My Librarian” award. Congratulations, Greta!
Deborah Klein, Medical Librarian, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, retired on January 10, 2013. Deborah has been a valued member of NN/LM PSR for many years, and we wish her well in all her future endeavors!
Marshall Medical Center Community Health Library, directed by Alison Clement, is currently moving to a new location, at 3581 Palmer Drive, Building 101, Cameron Park, CA, 95682. The library will reopen in February, 2013.
NN/LM PSR Director Judy Consales and Julia Kochi, Director of Collections and User Services, UCSF Library and Center for Knowledge Management, were elected to serve on the 2013 Medical Library Association Nominating Committee!
NLM Director Donald Lindberg, M.D., dedicated his December 24, 2012, weekly podcast to the late Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye, (1924-2012), whose leadership in civil rights, disabilities, and health care capped a remarkable legislative career and life.
