NLM Appoints Two New Regents - One from the Pacific Southwest Region!

NLM recently welcomed two new members to its governing body, the Board of Regents. They attended their first meeting on September 21-22, 2004. The Board meets three times a year at the NLM. In addition to 10 members appointed by the Health and Human Services Secretary to 4-year terms, there are 9 ex officio members.

Richard Chabrán has worked in the area of Latino librarianship for over 25 years. He chairs the California Community Technology Policy Group, a coalition of community-based and statewide organizations that works to ensure that underserved communities reap the benefits offered by computers, the Internet and digital innovations.

Chabrán has his MLS degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He has worked in California libraries since 1975, and he serves as a project advisor for the University of Arizona's Knowledge River program in the School of Information Resources and Library Science. He was selected to give ALA's 2004 Jean E. Coleman Library Outreach Lecture, presented on June 28, 2004 at the ALA annual meeting. A copy of the lecture announcement, Chabrán's biography, and the abstract of his paper are available on the ALA web site at: http://www.ala.org/ala/olos/olosprograms/jeanecoleman/jeanecoleman.htm.

Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich is CEO of The Gingrich Group, a management consulting firm dedicated to expanding the capabilities and reach of forward-looking corporations and organizations in the health and health care industry. Dr. Gingrich recently founded The Center for Health Transformation, a collaboration of public and private entities engaged in moving the United States towards a fair, knowledge-intense and innovation-rich system of health care.

A complete roster of NLM's Board of Regents, as well as minutes of their meetings back to January 1999, is available on the web at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/od/bor/bor.html.
