Congratulations to Natalie Kamper
NLM Associate Fellow
Natalie Joy Kamper, a June 2002 graduate of the UCLA Department of Information Studies, joins the ranks of NLM Associate Fellows beginning Fall 2002. The National Library of Medicine Associate Fellowship Program is a one-year postgraduate training fellowship at the NLM with an optional second year program component. The program is designed to prepare librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries and in health services research. During their year at NLM, the Associate Fellows are introduced to a wide range of technologies and skills used in managing information at a national library. More information about the NLM Associate Fellowship program is available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/about/training/associate/index.html.
During her library and information studies program at UCLA, Natalie was an intern at two Network members sites, the RAND Library and the USC Norris Medical Library. Network members who provide internship programs make a very valuable contribution to the recruitment and development of our future leaders. Natalie describes her internship experiences as follows:
At the RAND Library:
"I worked with Susan Scheiberg and Roberta Shanman (Reference) on a project to analyze the digital access points of electronic resources offered through the RAND Library intranet site and online catalog. I reviewed and summarized the data, and formally presented the results to the director, professional and support staff. I also created a short bibliography of articles intended to assist the professional staff in deciding how to best provide access to their electronic resources. I enjoyed working at RAND and being involved in their activities. I regularly attended weekly library manager meetings as well as the monthly Office of Services meetings, of which the library is a part."
At the USC Norris Medical Library:
"I spent about 5 months working in the Reference department with Jan Nelson at Norris Medical Library doing User Education. I taught classes in software use and searching medical information resources. In addition, I assisted in developing the curriculum for those classes. The internship ended on a high point with the completion of the Dreamweaver class that Dominique Turnbow and I created. We taught the official class on the last day of our internship, kicking off the new class to be offered at Norris upon our departure. For the class, we created an instructor script, handouts, and a demonstration Web site."
In October 2001, Natalie assisted in staffing the PSRML exhibit at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Health. She earned a B.S. in Kinesiology at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and was active in collegiate sports and served as Volleyball Coach for Redlands Unified School District.
Congratulations, Natalie! Best wishes as an NLM Associate Fellow! - JKK
