New Directions in Technology for Consumer Health

By Howard Fuller
Stanford Health Library

The recent Stanford Health Library and the PSRML symposium "Consumer Health Information: Bringing e-Content to the Consumer," brought together world and local leaders in their respective fields to discuss various aspects of Consumer Health Informatics/Consumer Health Information Services. If there was one message that was made clear it was that CHI/CHIS is an emerging multidisciplinary field that is being driven by the need for consumers to become better informed in our current health care environment. Many of those needs are being met with technological advancements and by enabling current computer technologies to a web environment. Gunther Eysenbach in an article published last year stated that CHI "is perhaps the most challenging and rapidly expanding field in medical informatics; it is paving the way for health care in the information age." (From BMJ, vol. 320, 24, June, 2000)
