NLM Technical Bulletin Highlights

The following are highlights from the May - June 2001 NLM Technical Bulletin.

NLM Contracts Awarded

  • Five year contracts have been awarded to eight institutions to serve as Regional Medical Libraries in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Two newcomers to this group include the University of Utah for the Midcontinental Region and the University of Massachusetts Medical School for the New England Region. These contracts are effective from May 1, 2001 through April 30, 2006.
  • NLM has awarded a contract for the National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC) to the New York Academy of Medicine.

PubMed

  • The PMID is the unique number for all records in PubMed, for example for DOCLINE or Loansome Doc needs. However, MEDLINE UIs (Unique Identifiers) will continue to be added through the 2001 production year.
  • The Single Citation Matcher in PubMed has been enhanced to include title words. This enables you to enter one or more words from the title of an article to find a citation in PubMed.
  • AIDS- and HIV-related journal citations from the former AIDSLINE database are now included in MEDLINE and can be searched in PubMed.
  • This issue includes instructions on how an individual can use the PubMed Cubby to display his/her library's icon for full-text retrieval.
  • The PubMed Journal Browser now includes ISSN's for both the print (pISSN) and electronic (eISSN) copies of journals. The Journal Browser now searches using the Journal Title Abbreviation rather than the ISSN as in the past.
  • NLM has a new factsheet: What's the Difference Between MEDLINE and PubMed.

LOCATORplus

  • This article includes a summary of changes to NLM's online catalog; these changes went into effect in February 2001.

NLM Gateway

  • AIDS-related meeting abstracts are now included in the NLM Gateway.
  • This article includes instructions on searching OLDMEDLINE in the NLM Gateway; OLDMEDLINE provides access to article citations from the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Conversion from Wade-Giles to Pinyin Romanization Scheme

  • NLM has begun a massive project to convert romanization of Chinese characters from the Wade-Giles system to Pinyin. New records added since October 1, 2000 use Pinyin. Title abbreviations for Chinese language indexed serial titles now occur in PubMed and MEDLINE in the revised Pinyin form. Records in LOCATORplus will be completed in approximately one year.
