NLM Technical Bulletin Highlights
Internet Grateful Med (IGM) to be Retired
No longer just a rumor, NLM expects to retire IGM by the end of June 2001. Searchers do have other retrieval options for the ELHILL databases they have been accessing through IGM. The following is a table of the database found in IGM, the replacement interface, and its availability.
| IGM Database | Interface* | Availability |
| AIDSDrugs | ACTIS | Now |
| AIDSTrials | ACTIS | Now |
| AIDSLINE | Gateway | Now |
| | PubMed's AIDS subset | Now |
| | LOCATORplus | Now |
| BIOETHICSLINE | Gateway | By June 2001 |
| CHEMID | ChemIDplus | Now |
| DIRLINE | DIRLINE | Now |
| Healthstar | PubMed | Now |
| | LOCATORplus | Now |
| | Gateway | Now |
| HISTLINE | Gateway | By June 2001 |
| MEDLINE | PubMed | Now |
| OldMEDLINE | Gateway | Now |
| POPLINE | Gateway | By June 2001 |
| SDILINE | PubMed's cubby feature | Now |
| SPACELINE | Gateway | By June 2001 |
*The above databases can be accessed via the Health Information page (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/hinfo.html) on the NLM web site, with the exception of ACTIS, which is at http://www.actis.org/index.html, and ChemIDplus which is at http://chem.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/.
Please note that all ELHILL databases being searched by IGM are now static. The last updates to these databases contained December 2000 entry month data.
PubMed Status/Changes
- PubMed Updated - PubMed is now completely up-to-date. Delays occurred in the annual year end processing due to the replacement of the system that manages data entry, indexing, and quality control of periodical citations. The PubMed that is now available includes MeSH 2001 changes, MEDLINE citations through the end of the 2000 indexing year, the publisher-supplied citations and in-process citation backlog, and MEDLINE citations indexed with MeSH 2001.
- Cubby - The Cubby Feature listed on the blue side bar has been available from September 2000 for storing searches. Searchers will also find it a convenient place to store hedges. Follow the easy directions for running your hedge and storing it in Cubby. When you're ready to use it click on the link from the search name to the information about the search. This allows you to run the search without update limits. Once you have the results, use PubMed's History feature to combine it with another search statement. [For more details about storing searches see the Cubby chapter in PubMed's Help http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:80/entrez/query/static/help/pmhelp.html#CubbyStoredSearches]
- Complementary Medicine SubSet Added - "Complementary Medicine" is a new subset available through PubMed's Limit screen. Retrieval can also be limited to this subject subset by the command: AND cam[sb].
- Subset Commands - For command language searchers, the Abridged Index Medicus journal subset has a new designation. The new command for limiting results to AIM journals is: AND jsubsetAIM. AND jsubset plus a journal subset designation (see below) can be used to limit your searches to the following subsets (among others):
- K Consumer health journals
- D Indexed dentistry journals
- N Indexed nursing journals
- T Indexed health technology assessment journals
- X Indexed AIDS/HIV journals
- UI Display - If you've trained your users to provide the MEDLINE UI for interlibrary loans, they now need to be trained to give you the PubMed UI (PMUI). PubMed UI's are the only UI's that will be displayed on the citation and abstract formats that end-users generally read. DOCLINE recognizes PMUI's and will map to the correct citation. MEDLINE UI's are still assigned but are only visible on the MEDLINE and XML display formats of the reference.
- Periods Removed from Author (Au) Field - NLM has eliminated all the periods from authors' names in the AU field. Now if you're searching for articles written by a Jerome S. St. Lawrence, the proper entry for the author's name is: St Lawrence JS[au]
- PubRef Removed - PubRef, a service to expand the bibliographic linking feature in PubMed, has been removed from the Subset list on PubMed's Limit Screen.
