Introducing Health Professionals to NLM's Online Systems

  • This PubMed tutorial, for new and also experienced users of the system, teaches users how to understand PubMed's scope and content, to use Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), to build a search, to manage results and to save search strategies.

  • PubMed Quick Tours are brief animated tutorials with audio highlighting different features of PubMed. Most are 1 - 3 minutes long.
  • ClinicalTrials.gov, a registry and results database of publicly and privately supported clinical studies of human participants conducted around the world, also provides tutorials and Quick Tours.

Consumer Health Classes for Public Libraries

  • Prescription for Success: Consumer Health on the Web. This hands-on introduction to consumer health information will cover the information-seeking behaviors of consumers, the basics of MedlinePlus.gov, DIRLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov and other reliable web pages such as those from professional medical associations and advocacy groups. It will cover sites devoted to pharmaceutical information for consumers, drug-interaction databases and herbal information.

  • From Snake Oil to Penicillin: Evaluating Consumer Health Information on the Internet.This hands-on course will describe why it is important to evaluate websites. Participants will be given criteria for how to evaluate health information on the Internet.

  • Looking in All the Wrong Places: PubMed for Public Librarians. This 3-hour hands-on class will cover basic and field searching, journal browser, single citation matcher, clipboard, history, and other features. It will also cover how to obtain full-text articles. The title of the PowerPoint can be changed and the class will work just as well for health professionals who are not very familiar with PubMed.

  • Beyond an Apple A Day: Providing Consumer Health Information in the Public Library. This hands-on class will cover the information seeking behaviors of consumers. It will also address the recommended core reference collection, as well as databases and newsletters/ periodicals. It will cover the reference interview, disclaimers, and privacy as well as networking with medical librarians. The class will introduce the students to the Medical Library Association and its local chapters. It will describe possible ways to market this service in a community.

Health Literacy in Your Community - Developed by the NN/LM PNR. This presentation and facilitator's guide is designed for use in group/community training sessions. The materials cover the importance of health literacy, and provide an introduction to Medline Plus and NIH Senior Health, plus guidelines for choosing trusted web-based health information sources.

Connecting Youth to Quality Health Information: A Lesson Plan for High School Health and Fitness Education - Developed by the Center for Public Health Nutrition at the Unversity of Washington. This is a lesson plan to increase the capacity and capability of high school students to access and evaluate quality health information. This lesson also establishes MedlinePlus as a recognized resource for current and future health information needs.

Quality Health Information on the Web: A Tool Kit - Another resource from the Center for Public Health Nutrition at the University of Washington. This site will assist you in finding answers to student health questions. You can learn how to identify accurate and reliable health information using MedlinePlus and elsewhere on the internet.
