This is the beginning of the first year of a new five-year
contract in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. There
is much in the Pacific Northwest Regional Medical Library
contract that will be familiar to the region. One provision that
is familiar, with slight revisions, is funding for outreach. We
will be able to provide opportunities for our Network Members and
Affiliate Network Members to obtain support for outreach projects
and persistent Internet connections. It is the mission of this
RML to improve the health information literacy of underserved
populations and populations with poor health status; and the care
providers, public health workers, librarians, and other health
intermediaries who serve those populations. Outreach is a
strategy toward this end. We look to the members of our Network
to assist us in accomplishing this work through resource library
subcontracts, local outreach awards, and training and exhibit
awards. Persistent Internet connections for Network members who
meet the criteria will also be funded.
Outreach funding
- Resource Library Subcontracts: The RML will continue
to involve the region's Resource Libraries in outreach to
target communities, as it has in the past. To that end, the RML
will award one $35,000 outreach subcontract this year, with
plans to continue this funding in subsequent years of the
contract. The 2001 Request for Proposals (RFP) is available on
the Web at http://nnlm.gov/pnr/funding/rfp_2001.html. The
deadline for proposals is June 15, 2001.
- Local Outreach Awards: Members and affiliate members
of the NN/LM PNR are eligible to obtain funding for outreach
projects. The target audience and emphasis of the outreach
efforts should be in accord with those of the RML, as described
above. There will be at least two awards each year of up to
$15,000 each. The Request for Quotations (RFQ) for the 2001
awards will be announced in the coming weeks.
- Training and Exhibit Awards: This funding category
is new. We are offering support for Network members and
affiliates to conduct training sessions or exhibit at meetings
of local, state, or regional associations. As with our other
outreach funding the target audience and emphasis should be in
keeping with that of the RML. Network members who apply for
this funding are expected to reach out to audiences and groups
they may not normally serve. There will be a total of $5,000
each year to support these small projects. Simple online forms
will make application easy. Watch for the announcement of these
awards on the NN/LM PNR Web site. (http://nnlm.gov/pnr/)
Persistent Connections
- The goal of this funding is to improve Internet
connectivity and its effective use by Network members.
Persistent connections - those available 24 hours/day, 7-days/
week, at 256K bits/second or faster - are thought to promote
more active member participation in the Network. A total of
$5,000 each year will be available for funding equipment,
installation, connectivity or user support for persistent
connections. The application process will be as simple as
possible. Watch for it.
