Halamka to Present 2010 Joseph Leiter NLM/MLA Lecture

Knowledge Services and the Role of Medical Libraries in Healthcare IT

John D. Halamka, MD, MS, will give the 2010 Joseph Leiter NLM/MLA Lecture on Wednesday, May 26, at 2:00 pm at the Lister Hill Center Auditorium at the National Library of Medicine.

Dr. Halamka is the Chief Information Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Chief Information Officer of Harvard Medical School. In addition, Dr. Halamka participates on several state and national committees. He serves as Chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), and is the current the Chair of the U.S. Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) and co-Chair of the HIT Standards Committee. He also authors a blog: Life as a Healthcare CIO.

The lecture will be recorded and broadcast live on the Web to Medical Library Association members and the NIH community at http://videocast.nih.gov.

The Joseph Leiter NLM/MLA Lecture was established in 1983 to stimulate intellectual liaison between the Medical Library Association and the National Library of Medicine.

MLA webcast: Understanding Electronic Health Records

Join your colleagues on Wednesday, March 24th from 11am-1pm (Pacific time) for the Medical Library Association (MLA) webcast Now’s the Time: Understanding the Electronic Health Record Maze and Health Sciences Librarians’ Roles.  The goal of this program is to clarify the terminology surrounding the emerging electronic health information environment and to illustrate how and why health sciences librarians can and should become engaged with the efforts to achieve the national 2014 goal of instituting an electronic health record for each person in the United States. Presenters include Margaret Bandy, AHIP; Janice Willis, Sara Pimental, AHIP; David Sweet, Elaine Alligood, Kelly Near and Annette Williams.

The Pacific Northwest Region (PNR) will host the webcast at the University of Washington Health Sciences Library, LTL.  If you will join us for the webcast at UW please register at http://tinyurl.com/PNRWebcastReg.

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR), is pleased to announce a call for applications for a workshop on Knowledge Sharing in Hospitals: The Librarian’s Role at the Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, Oregon on July 29-30, 2010 led by Lorri Zipperer and eligible for 9.5 units of MLA CE credit.

Many websites are developed without the special needs of people with visual impairments, hearing loss, and/or mobility challenges in mind. Two New Funding Opportunities: Health Literacy Partnerships with Physician Assistants and Express Outreach Awards

Greetings Pacific Northwest Region!

Know any physician assistants or librarians with whom you want to partner?  How about a group with which you’ve always wanted to do outreach activities surrounding health information?  The NN/LM PNR is pleased to announce two new funding opportunities.

First, there is the “Health Information Literacy Partnership Award: Physician Assistants & Librarians.”  The goals of this award are:

* To promote health information literacy and surrounding issues;
* To improve the use of quality health information resources for patient education by physician assistants;
* To promote strategies for improving patient health information literacy by physician assistants;
* To foster local health information expertise among physician assistants;
* To promote awareness and use of the products and services of the NLM and the NNLM, including, but not limited to the InfoRx Program.

Next, we have another round of “Express Outreach Awards.”  Goals of these awards are:

* To improve use of quality online health information resources by priority populations (as defined below);
* To promote health information literacy in health education and health care;
* To build or strengthen partnerships between network members and other community organizations;
* To foster local health information expertise in community organizations;
* To promote awareness and use of the products and services of the NLM and the NNLM.
