No offense taken, Kathy ;) You are absolutely right that some of the best information comes from fellow students. The instructors think so, too, and are always looking for ways to encourage more participation.

I have taken a number of distance education classes and find the interactions to be very stimulating but the importance of careful communication can not be overemphasized. It is important to add the smiley face icons when using humor, some people might be offended or decide you are not mentally stable if your idea of a joke goes flat. Remember at a distance there is not going to be any way to hear the irony in your voice or the wink and smile at the end of the sentence unless you include it in the text! Some of my best information comes not from the instructor, but from fellow students. No offence to the instructors, just that learning peer to peer is pretty powerful and online discussions are very organic.
