From Bench to Bedside

St. Peter Hospital

Olympia, Washington

Edean Berglund, M.L.S., Librarian

St. Peter Hospital, with 340 beds, is the referral center for several counties of Washington State. St. Peter has a family practice residency program, a research program in conjunction with the University of Washington, and has active missionary programs in Russia, the Philippines, Chile, Uganda, and Zambia. St. Peter is a member of the Sisters of Providence health care system.

Jim Robertson, Certified Network Engineer, St. Peter Hospital, Olympia:
We had the Ungermann-Bass representative at our hospital to install a diskette on the hospital mainframe, but the diskette he had was damaged and he only had one diskette with him.

We weren't even completely connected to the Internet yet, but he asked, out of the blue, "Do you have Internet?"

I said, "Yes," and showed him how to access ftp. He actually attached to the host at his corporate office in Santa Clara and we had the file within minutes.

If we hadn't had Internet the site visit would have been wasted: we would have had to order a new diskette and he would have had to make a new site visit to install it.
