Class Description

This class is only taught by NLM Personnel and is only held at the National Library of Medicine, in Bethesda.

This 8-hour, hands-on course introduces NLM's Unified Medical Language System® (UMLS®) and describes how its resources can contribute to more effective and interoperable biomedical information systems and services, including electronic health records.

The class focuses on the UMLS Metathesaurus and how it integrates and distributes over 100 key terminology, classification and coding standards used in clinical, research, and educational applications.

The online UMLS® Knowledge Source Server (UMLSKS) is used to access UMLS® data throughout the class. Hands-on exercises allow students to practice basic and advanced searching skills. Students also use the UMLS customization software, MetamorphoSys, to create a small customized Metathesaurus subset.

The course is designed for medical librarians who are interested in the UMLS® and issues and practical considerations for selecting and using medical terminology standards to promote interoperability across healthcare applications.

UMLS® Basics is a free class and is awarded 7.5 MLA continuing education credits.
