The goal of this hands-on course is to provide participants with a set of specialized professional competencies in providing consumer health information services. By the end of the course, participants will have a deep understanding of the health information needs of their own target audiences/communities, and they will have practical knowledge and skills to build collections, resources and programming to meet the specific needs of their communities.
The course begins with activities to learn about the demographic and health status indicators of communities and the implications of the data for libraries and appropriate responses. Participants build on the foundation through readings, discussion and activities about health literacy, reference and services for special populations, unique issues with health-related collection development, mobile apps and content, plus the use of social networking related to health issues. The online component requires discussion and sharing of topics and all assignments to enhance the learning experience of all participants.
