INside OUTreach

Are you responsible for coming up with continuing education programs in your institution or company? Need a speaker for an upcoming meeting? Are you looking for ways to interest people in your library services or letting them know that PubMed, Medlineplus, and the NLM Gateway are available for their use? Is your institution, company, or library putting on a health fair, information seminar, or doing an open house?

Well, you've come to the right place! Part of our function here at the NER is to provide just those sorts of educational and outreach services. We will provide basic PubMed training, consumer health information training with Medlineplus, training in how to use the NLM Gateway, ClinicalTrials.gov or Docline training. We have courses suitable for consumers, for librarians, for physicians, for nurses, for anyone interested in learning about NLM products and services. We have courses available which have been approved for CME credit by NIH.

Class development is an ongoing process and we will work with you to provide the kind of training you think your group would benefit most from.

How do you arrange to have a class taught at your institution or in your area? The first step is to contact the NER and let us know what you're interested in and the dates you have in mind. We will be happy to work with you. Please be aware that some times of the year are busier than others, so the more lead time you can give us, the better.

The NER will provide the instructor and the class handouts. We also have a laptop and a projector that we can bring along with us - we are fully portable! People often ask what we charge for this and the answer is there are no speaker fees or fees associated with classes. That's because we are funded through the National Library of Medicine and education and outreach are essential to our mission. It's part of the reason why we exist as an RML. Or, as we like to point out, the taxpayers of this great nation have already paid for out services.

So, if you're interested in organizing a class in your area, feel free to contact the NER at 1-800-338-7657. Or you may email me at Donna.Berryman@umassmed.edu.

For those of you who are in central Massachusetts, there are classes currently scheduled at Baystate: a Docline class is scheduled for July 31, 2002 and a PubMed class on October 30, 2002.
