Public Health Partners Web Site Offers RSS Feeds

The Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce is now offering RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds for new content and news items posted to its website, http://PHPartners.org. The PHPartners RSS feed will keep you informed about news in public health, upcoming meetings, and new public health online resources.

The PHPartners feed address is http://phpartners.org/rss_phpartners.xml.

PHPartners is a collaboration of U.S. government agencies, public health organizations and health science libraries which provides timely, convenient access to selected resources on the Internet.

    NEW! Emergency Preparedness and Response Info for Health Educators

    A new, electronic newsletter focusing on emergency preparedness and response is now available for health educators. Produced biweekly by the Society for Public Health Education, "Emergency Preparedness and Response News U Can Use," highlights the latest information on both natural and man-made disasters.

    Whether you are working directly on an emergency response team or not — ALL HEALTH EDUCATORS SHOULD BE READY TO RESPOND TO THEIR CONSTITUENCIES AT SOME LEVEL IN AN EMERGENCY.

    This FREE resource includes:

    • Latest alerts and news items of interest,
    • New resources on risk communication and emergency response,
    • Calendar of upcoming training opportunities, events, and
    • Job opportunities,
    • Latest funding opportunities.

    Topic areas highlighted include: Influenza, Bioterrorism, Natural Disasters, and more.

    Visiting Bethesda? Check out this History of Medicine exhibit at NLM showcasing seven of the beautiful, century-old treasures in its collection that are mentioned in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. Exhibit open through November 30, 2007.

    Toxie the Cat Can Now Speak Spanish/ Toxie the Cat Ahora Habla Español

    Toxie, the ToxMystery (http://toxmystery.nlm.nih.gov) guide cat, has returned to school and can now speak Spanish. By selecting the "Espanol" or "English" tab on the upper right of the homepage, gamers can move between Spanish and English as they explore the site's "house of hazards."

    ToxMystery is an e-learning game that uses animation, sound effects and positive reinforcement to help 7-11 year olds learn about possible chemical hazards around the home. ToxMystery en español's "Para los padres" (For Parents) page gives parents more detailed information about potential household hazards. The "Para maestros" (Teachers) page has lesson plans and downloadable classroom activity pages in Spanish. ToxMystery can be used in science and health classes.

    Come play with Toxie and see if you can find the hazards in English and en español!

    Papers of Pioneering Molecular Biologist Sol Spiegelman added to the National Library of Medicine’s Profiles in Science Website

    Papers of Sol Spiegelman, (1914-1983), a pioneering molecular biologist whose discoveries helped reveal the mechanisms of gene action and laid the foundations of recombinant DNA technology, have been added to the NLM’s Profiles in Science Website. If you haven’t already seen it, you must take a look at this resource. You will find biographical information about famous scientists including correspondence, publications and photos. It is fascinating to get an up close look at the life of each scientist. See how education, relationships and personal experience helped shape careers and major scientific discoveries.
