Applications due: Health Statistics Book Discussion
Know Your Chances: Understanding Health Statistics
Book Discussion Group Project Application
We invite you to collaborate with us to offer a book discussion group featuring the book, Know Your Chances: Understanding Health Statistics. Stephen Woloshin and Lisa Schwartz, the authors of the book, will participate in the project. Libraries and organizations selected to participate are required to: host/lead the book discussion at least once; join us for a planning teleconferences, and provide a brief post-project report to share their experiences. Participants should save the following dates for planning teleconferences to develop materials for the book discussion group: Thursday, September 4th at 2 PM and Tuesday, September 30th at 2 PM. There will also be a wrap-up teleconference in April 2015.
On March 4, 2014, the authors of Know Your Chances: Understanding Health Statistics presented a webinar for the Healthy Communities, Community of Interest. The recording is available at: https://webmeeting.nih.gov/p3n5k2rykp0/ The book is available in full text on the PubMed Bookshelf at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0050876/ The webinar prompted interest in book clubs to help consumers learn how to understand statistics, know what questions to ask, and see through the hype of health news reporting. We invite you to select an audience for a book discussion. Ideal audiences include public libraries, high school students, health professions students, teachers, support groups or patient educators. The authors recommend hosting a book discussion for caregivers helping family members of people with an illness.
What You Will Get from the Experience:
• Collaboration with the authors to develop book discussion support materials
• Peer support for running a book discussion group
• Experience developing assessment/evaluation materials with the support of the NN/LM OERC (Outreach Evaluation Resource Center)
• Opportunity to jointly author a journal article/publication highlighting the project
Please complete the brief application and return it to Michelle Eberle at: firstname.lastname@example.org by June 15, 2014.
