Clear: Conversations Project
By Margot Malachowski, Health Literacy COI Leader
This summer, the Health Literacy COI invited five organizations in the New England Region to participate in our Clear: Conversations project. Clear: Conversations is a program created by Health Literacy Missouri to empower patients to communicate effectively with their health care providers. The program teaches patients how to ask questions and how to slow down the conversation. Clear: Conversations takes an innovative approach to “teach back” by telling patients how to identify “teach back” and how to initiate this conversation if the health care provider does not. Clear: Conversations relies on role-playing as the primary method of instructing patients in health literacy.
The Health Literacy COI is providing five organizations with Clear: Conversations materials and teleconference support. Thus far, we have reviewed the expectations of the project and have revised the Health Literacy Missouri questionnaires to better fit our needs. The participating organizations will offer at least one Clear: Conversations program and provide a brief report to share their experiences. Our participants include the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Brookline Community Aging Network, Boston Public Health Commission, and Healthnet at the University of Connecticut.
We look forward to sharing our experiences with this project. If you have any questions about Clear: Conversations , please contact us for more information.
