The HKSC FIELD GUIDE: Hot off the Press

Monday, December 5th, 2011

If you haven’t already, you should check out The HKSC Field Guide. The Healthcare Knowledge Services Center Field Guide is now readily accessible (as a PDF document) as an entry in the NER Repository.

As stated in its introduction:

The guide was developed with the intent of fulfilling three principal functions:

  1. Provide checklists for the primary steps to auditing, enhancing and growing your operation, in a workbook-style format;
  2. Provide short anecdotal notes of inspiration with examples of practices already in evidence, with the intent of sparking an idea to spur a new initiative or make a course correction; and
  3. Provide links to other resources for making changes and improvements, learning about what others are doing, have done, or explanations about “how to do it.”

The Guide will be a useful tool for all health science librarians. Whether you seek to improve operations at a traditional library setting or make the gradual transition to a knowledge services center, you will find the Guide replete with checklists and worksheets to assist you in the act of practical application.

The Field Guide represents the end product of Phase One (Development) of the NER’s five-year plan to introduce knowledge management concepts to hospital libraries throughout the region.

Phase Two (Implementation) officially began in November 2011 with the kickoff of a first wave of pilot projects – one funded and one unfunded:

  • The Maine Medical Center (MMC) Library in Portland, ME was awarded $12,500 to “initiate a repository of locally generated research, clinical and academic content.”  The pilot department for their project is their Sports Medicine program. By the end of the funded period (April, 2012), MMC staff  “will begin the implementation of a site-wide Knowledge Management service.”
  • The SVHC Health Services Library, situated at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT, is developing “a proposal to transition from library services to knowledge management services.” Although the SVHC Library did not apply for funding, project outcomes and results will be shared with the NER and hospital librarians throughout the region. The proposed project is expected to be completed in September, 2012.

Solicitation for a second wave of pilots is currently under way at the NER, with proposals due January 20, 2012.

The total funding amount to be made available for the second wave is $12,500. Awarded pilots will be launched on May 1, 2012, and performance periods are expected to be concluded on or before April 30, 2013.

Please contact the NER (Javier or Mark) with any inquiries.
