New US Dietary Guidelines
Check out the latest Dietary Guidelines from the US Dept of Agriculture, Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. The new guidelines include a stronger emphasis on reducing calorie consumtion and increasing physical activity. The guidelines encourage consuming more vegetable, fruits, whole grains, fat free and low fat dairy, seafood and consuming less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added sugars and refined grains. The guidelines include concrete action steps to live healthier, more active, longer lives.
The new guidelines recommend:
- Enjoy your food, but eat less
- Avoid oversized portions
- Make half your plate fruits or vegetables
- Switch to fat free or low fat milk
- Compare sodium in foods and choose the foods with the lower numbers
- Drink water instead of sugary drinks
