Breezing Along with the RML: RML Updates

Introduction and Instructions

What: 2010- present Breezing Along with the RML Sessions

When: Third Wednesday of every month at 10 am MT and 11am CT

What: Two staff members from the RML or guests will present information on goals, activities, accomplishments, or resources. We may ask about your experiences or your opinions. We may encourage you to take action, offer a new service, or try a new technology. Every month will be different.

How: The updates are conducted using Adobe Acrobat Connect. To test whether you can view the session try playing back one of our archived versions. If you have problems contact Rebecca Brown, Technology Coordinator, to help trouble shoot your system.

Logging In: Go to http://webmeeting.nih.gov/mcr/. Enter as a guest. Sign in with your first and last names. Follow the instructions in the meeting room to have the Adobe Acrobat Connect system call you on your telephone.

Claire Hamasu and Barb Jones held a discussion on the Library Evaluation Scan conducted earlier in the year which was designed to track the organizational positioning and status of the library within hospitals in the MCR. No recording is available for this session.

1) Claire Hamasu - Communication Audit. The RML strives to be a leader within the MidContinental Region and in April of this year completed a communication audit to improve the language of our leadership. Learn how we plan to improve our communication with you.
2) Dana Abbey interviewed Dr. Kurt Beam, a professor and researcher in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Beam talked about his own data intensive research, thoughts on sharing data, and provided a perspective on e-Science data wrangling.

1)  Barb Jones introduced Susan Meadows, MLS, librarian for the Family and Community Medicine Department, University of Missouri School of Medicine, who shared information about her clinical librarianship program within a teaching department, and
2) Betsy Kelly introduced Susan Fowler and Lauren Yaeger who shared their experience partnering with St Louis Children's Hospital Medical IT and Emergency Unit to enable access to patient specific information through the SLCH electronic health record knowledge page.

1) Rebecca Brown reported on the 2010 Health Literacy Institute and provides an overview of the latest national data on health literacy, features of user-centered health information materials, and possible roles for librarians. 2) John Bramble led a panel discussion with Margaret Bandy, Roz Dudden, and Lenora Kinzie, on succession planning and what you can do to position your library to provide services well into the future. 1) Barb Jones interviewed Arthur Culbert, Ph.D., President and CEO of Health Literacy Missouri on the importance and scope of health literacy in our communities. 2) Marty Magee, in highlighting the History of Medicine, hosted Stephen Greenberg from the National Library of Medicine to highlight information from NLM and 175th anniversary activities. 1) Claire Hamasu reviewed the background of meaningful use and described the documentation to incorporate MedlinePlus into electronic health records for MedlinePlus Connect. 2) Diagnostic error is the leading cause of malpractice in every health care organization according to Mark Graber, MD, co-chair of the 3rd Annual International Diagnostic Errors in Medicine Conference. Barb Jones shared her experiences and insights gained at the conference as well as sharing her poster and panel presentations. Click here to watch the archived session. 1) Rachel Gyore, librarian at Dykes Health Sciences Library, presented her project: Connecting with Our Community: Using BibApp to Showcase Academic Health Center Faculty and Their Research. The project was developed to show how scholarly publishing, public access, and research connections can be promoted using BibApp, an open-source tool that identifies experts on campus, promotes their research, and archives their work. 2) John Bramble reported on the MCR Regional Advisory Board annual meeting discussion on how the move, by health sciences libraries, to licensing only electronic journals titles will change ILL in the 2011-2016 contract. 1) Sharon Dennis welcomed Doreen Roberts, Librarian at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth Minnesota, who presented an overview of a selection of mHealth apps for both clinical and consumer uses, including some she has used successfully for her own personal health. 2) Dana Abbey introduced guest speaker Helen MacFarlane, MA, Director of Educational Technology at the University of Colorado's School of Medicine.who spoke on the topic of medical illustration. Special guest Sharon Medcalf, of the Nebraska Center for Preparedness Education, presented a model for librarians to use to assist them in planning their own emergency preparedness program in their communities. Betsy Kelly, Assessment and Evaluation Liaison, presented about creating and administrating online surveys and some of the free and easy-to-use online applications available. The April Breezing Along with the RML featured two presentations 1) Jim Honour on a tour of the NN/LM MidContinental Region website and 2) Dana Abbey on Go Local. Recording not available.

March 17th
The March Breezing Along with the RML featured two presentations on promoting change and citation bookmarking services: Promoting Change by Heather Brown and Ann Kaste from the University of Nebraska Medical Center focused on using mobile technologies and social media to promote change in the library. A presentation by Rebecca Brown focused on two citation bookmarking services, CiteULike and Connotea. Click here to watch the archived session.

February 17th
The February Breezing Along with the RML featured John Bramble and Siobhan Champ-Blackwell. They talked about ways to spread cheer among your colleagues and promote your library! Siobhan will talk about the Library Success Wiki, and effective practices. How do you decide which of your many successful activities at your library are ready to be added to the wiki? Siobhan also reviewed some guidelines the MCR has developed and share some entries already added to the “Services for Health Information Consumers” section of the wiki. John talked about how Network members are meeting the minimum requirements of membership in the area of fill rates and minimum number of collection size. John also talked about what the RML is doing to help members that are not meeting these requirements. Click here to watch the archived session.

January 20th
The NN/LM MidContinental Region's 2010 Breezing Along with the RML series resumed with presenters Jean Shipman, Director, and Claire Hamasu, Associate Director. Jean Shipman highlighted several organization scholarly communications efforts, including the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL)'s Joint AAHSL/Publisher Liaison Task Force and Scholarly Communications Committee. She also talked about the educational efforts underway by the Chicago Collaborative, a working group established in 2008 to promote open communication and education among the primary stakeholders in the scholarly scientific communication area.
