Realizing that professional development is an essential part a librarian's continuing education, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, MidContinental Region will be awarding Professional Development subsidies (up to $1,500 each) to support librarians.
Funding is currently closed, but will reopen on May 1, 2014.
Professional Development Award requirements:
- Before you apply for the Professional Development Award, you will need to discuss this with the library administration and meet with your institutional administration that is organizationally placed above the library to determine, 1) what would be applicable for your position, 2) how it can benefit your institution, and 3) your responsibility within your institution to share your experiences with the library and with higher level administration. Document these items in your application on Question #6. This requirement is being implemented in order for you to become better known in your institution and to show upper level administration that you wish to contribute to the institution, as well as the library.
- Attendance at the event must take place before April 30, 2014.
- Funds can be used for registration and/or travel within the United States.
- This award is intended for educational purposes only, and not for use with professional organization officer/committee commitments.
- Your responsibility to the MidContinental Region will be to share your experiences through a newsletter article, presentation, or a way mutually agreed upon with the NN/LM MCR.
- Recipients for the 2013-2014 year will be targeted toward four librarians.
- The applicant's institution must be a Full Network member of the MidContinental Region and the applicant must hold a full-time health science library position.

Please be sure to give ample explanation about the event you wish to attend and how the information you gain might be of benefit to others in our region. Following is an example that shows the level of information we need to review your application. This answers the survey question #5.
"Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is being discussed in many venues in our organization, by medical staff, nursing staff, and administrators. The librarian's expertise and library products are frequently mentioned as part of the conversation. I sometimes question whether any of these groups including the librarian have a real understanding of EBP. I want to be seen as knowledgeable and as one of the "go-to" experts. The Evidence-Based Institute will provide me a chance to be immersed in EBP with no outside distractions for three days, and the instructors are top notch. Opportunities to use what I learn will be used, 1) As we move forward with our EPIC project (electronic documentation/medical record) and 2) as we want to standardize care using Evidence-Based information.
I have been asked to sit on our Informatics Council to support decisions made regarding EBP products/questions for Nursing Continuing Education. The librarian and nurse researcher teach two sessions annually, entitled Step Into the Evidence to Magnet Process. The librarian has been involved since the beginning in our Magnet journey and sits on the Nursing Research Council. The Nursing Practice Council also consults with the librarian regarding new Evidence- Based policies, procedures, etc. The librarian's attendance at the EBP Institute will be noted as Magnet evidence in our reapplication documentation for Teaching Nursing Students. The librarian teaches each semester in the Baker School of Nursing Research Class, both in the classroom and then in 8-10 small group sessions. Professionally: As a member of MCMLA Research Committee I have already offered to write and share what I learn with our chapter via the new column we are planning to put in each issue of the MCMLA Express (chapter electronic newsletter). I would like the opportunity to present a session regarding highlights for a Breezing Along with the RML session. and write a review of the Institute for the Plains to Peaks Post , I will share the information from the Evidence-Based Institute with hospital administration, medical and nursing staff and if the funding would come from a library-related organization it would be favorably recognized. The NN/LM MidContinental Region is offering up to 20 awards of $150 to encourage DOCLINE member libraries, in Region 4, to enroll in the Electronic Funds Transfer System (EFTS.) EFTS is a cost-efficient program for libraries using the DOCLINE system. https://efts.uchc.edu/EftsPublic/about.aspx . Non-EFTS libraries are eligible to receive the funding by applying for the award.
- Be a MCR DOCLINE library and non-participating EFTS member
- Apply for funding by April 30, 2014. Applications will be accepted and reviewed until funds are no longer available, or until the deadline.
All award funds will be sent directly to and depostied with EFTS. Awardees will be responsible for creating an account with EFTS within 30 days of award start date. EFTS will then transfer funds to awardee's account.
Applicants must state their commitment to sustaining EFTS membership at end of project. Applicants will be selected based on need, willingness to promote EFTS to other non-users of EFTS and the level of commitment their institution has in support of the system. A high frequency of for-cost borrowing will also be considered.
Requirements after receiving the Award:
- Awardees will sign a participation agreement.
- Funds must be used within one year of start date. Awardee will report to the RML when the award funds are spent. Unused funds will revert back to the NN/LM MCR.
- The awardee must make every effort to continue EFTS membership after the MCR funding is used. If they discontinue paricipation in EFTS, they will write a report recounting their experience and the factors involved in dropping their participation.
- Awardees will report, via MCR communication tools, on the benfits of using EFTS and promote to others.
Awards will be offered by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, MidContinental Region (NN/LM MCR) to recognize successful partnerships between public libraries and K-12 entities (e.g., school library, school nurse, health/science teachers) involving health information that can serve as a model for other similar partnerships.
