The Current State of Health Care for People with Disabilities

From the Executive Summary: Primary barriers to health and health care for the general population are beginning to be well documented, and heightened national awareness of these obstacles has spurred numerous proposals for health care reform. Among the groups that face such barriers are Americans with disabilities. Information remains limited, but recent studies indicate that people with disabilities experience both health disparities and specific problems in gaining access to appropriate health care, including health promotion and disease prevention programs and services. They also frequently lack either health insurance or coverage for necessary services such as specialty care, long-term care, care coordination, prescription medications, durable medical equipment, and assistive technologies.

What kind of impact can a public health nurse make in the life of a patient? Public Health in Action, a new video, photographic and narrative series from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Public Health Team, tells the story of how public health professionals make our communities healthier places to live, work, learn and play. First up: Kane Kares Nurse-Family Partnership, a longstanding program that links nurses from Kane County with first-time, teenage mothers to help them through pregnancy, babyhood and the toddler stage to help promote bonding, best health practices, and parenting guidance. Kane Kares is an approved site of a national, evidence-based program, the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), which has helped thousands of young families. It also has published proven results including high immunization rates and a reduction in violent crime among program participants. The series includes an essay about the program, pictorial slide shows of two mothers and their babies, a short documentary about Kane County nurse Carol Moshier, R.N., visiting clients, and a video Q and A with Kane County Health Director Paul Kuehnert.
