NLM FUNDS GRANTS FOR INTERNET ACCESS TO DIGITAL LIBRARIES

The National Library of Medicine recently announced 52 awards in its new Internet Access to Digital Libraries (IADL) grant program. Of the 52 awardees, ten are in the NN/LM Middle Atlantic region. Our congratulations are extended to the following institutions:

Project Title: Electronic Classroom for Health Information Literacy
Objectives: Installing a computer classroom. Performing needs assessment, and providing training in health information access for nursing faculty and students of the college.

NTCC 2003 TRAINING SCHEDULE

The Year 2003 training schedule of the National Training Center & Clearinghouse (NTCC) has been announced. Direct your web-browser to http://www.nnlm.gov/mar/online for a complete listing of the PubMed and Toxnet classes. The schedule includes class offerings at NLM, Regional Medical Library Centers and various institutions throughout the United States. You will see some new sites, and sites that the NTCC has not visited in a couple of years.

Also, with this calendar year, the trainers at National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the NTCC are announcing a reorganization of the NLM Online Training Program classes. We have adjusted the class offerings in order to cover the varied features and nuances for each database/system adequately and at a comfortable pace. The NLM Technical Bulletin issue number 328, September-October 2002 carries the announcement concerning the reorganization of the class offerings. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/so02/so02_2003_training.html

For 2003, we will offer a one-day class devoted entirely to PubMed as well as a new half-day class concentrating on the NLM Gateway and ClinicalTrials.gov; TOXNET is still offered as a one-day class. Previously, discussion of the NLM Gateway and ClinicalTrials.gov was somewhat limited, occurring at the end of an already full instruction period. We also found that it was increasingly difficult to cover PubMed features and enhancements when all three systems were included in a single class offering. This reorganization will provide classes that are more focused and efficient.

NLM EXHIBITION FOCUSES ON ANATOMY, MEDICINE, AND THE ARTISITIC IMAGINATION

Displaying some of its rare anatomical books and prints for the first time to the general public, the National Library of Medicine's "Dream Anatomy" http://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/dreamanatomy/index.html exhibition opened on October 9, 2002 and runs through July 2003. NLM owns one of the world's most extensive collections of historical anatomical books and prints; many of them are found in only a few libraries around the world.

The books, illustrations, and sculptures span A.D. 1500 to 2002. Anatomical artists pay homage to the body hidden under the skin with woodcuts, copper engravings, lithographs, photographs, and digital imaging. While many of the Library's rare anatomical books will be exhibited for the first time, the exhibition will also feature the work of 20th- and 21st-century artists, including a six-foot Plexiglas book of the Visible Humans, a hologram, and interactive anatomical displays.

DOCLINE 1.4 Release Notes

DOCLINE 1.4 was released on September 10, 2002. Complete release notes can be viewed at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/docline/docline_rel_info_v1_4.html Below are a few of the high points for your consideration.

In response to user requests, several new fields were added to the DOCUSER record. NLM asks all DOCLINE libraries to update their DOCUSER records to include information in these new fields. While updating your records, please use it as an opportunity to review your entire DOCUSER record to ensure its accuracy and completeness.

Since DOCUSER information is used by DOCLINE for routing and display (see Document Delivery Address, Delivery Methods and Routing Profile. The latter two screens can be found on the Interlibrary Loan tab), it is a critical information source for all Network libraries throughout North America.

DOCUSER > Search/Update

From the DOCLINE main menu select DOCUSER > Update. The default is the Document Delivery address. On the drop down menu to the left of the screen select Institution. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and, entering the complete URL, including http://
* Add your institution's home page URL in the space provided;
* Add your library's home page URL in the space provided.
* Add your library's main phone number in the space provided.

Select the Contacts tab. Note that the screen opens on "Interlibrary Loan" contact. Click on the drop down menu to the left of the screen; three (3) new contact screens have been added: Consumer Health, LinkOut contact, and "Other." Use "Other" to add staff not associated with any of the other contact types, e.g., Systems Librarian [by the way, "Network" contact does not mean the person in charge of your computer network-it's the person who is the point of contact with the RML].

Click on the Interlibrary Loan tab and select "ILL Services" from the drop down menu. The display only field indicates whether or not a library participates in EFTS. Please use the "Contact your RML" blue hyperlink to notify us of any needed changes to the information.

Select the Services tab. A new field has been added to authorize a listing in the MEDLINEplus® Consumer Health Libraries page http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/libraries.html

DOCUSER > Search/View

* In Search, the ability to search by the number of holdings has been added.
* In Display results as: "ILL Information," you can now see the number of holdings an institution has as well as the library groups it belongs to.
* In Display results as: "Contact Names," search results list all contact types in addition to the ILL contact name.

TUGGER, THE DOCLINE MASCOT

What does that dog have to do with DOCLINE?

* Tugger appears when the system is down for maintenance. Tugger aims to please while the humans work on upgrading DOCLINE.

* Important facts about Tugger:
Age: 5
Height: 15 inches
Weight: 20 pounds
Favorite Activities: Playing Frisbee, taking naps in the sun, chewing, and snuggling with his humans.
Favorite Foods: Carrots and bananas (Tugger is far less picky than several human members of the DOCLINE team).
Skills: Sit, stay, shake (paw), crawl and dance. Tugger is currently working on his rollover skills.
