RESOURCE LIBRARY DIRECTORS MEET

by Mary Mylenki, Associate Director

On July 17, 2001, the directors of the Resource Libraries in the Middle Atlantic Region met at the New York Academy of Medicine. This was the first annual meeting of the group under the new contract. Nearly all of the 24 Resource Libraries were represented. The RML staff and the directors welcomed Angela Ruffin, head of NLM's National Network Office, as our guest. Dr. Ruffin gave an informative presentation about the complex process by which RMLs are selected and described the expanded goals of the NN/LM program.

Mary Mylenki, Associate Director for the NN/LM Middle Atlantic Region, followed up with an overview of the regional program, describing ongoing program areas such as network membership and plans to increase it; the role of Resource Libraries; and a new structuring of the Regional Advisory Committee. Ms. Mylenki spoke briefly about the National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC), which had also been mentioned by Dr. Ruffin, and answered some questions. The NTCC staff's first priority is updating the training manuals, which will be posted on the NN/LM web page and will be available in both MSWord and pdf formats. The clearinghouse functions are still under discussion between NLM staff and the NTCC staff.

A substantial portion of the meeting, morning and afternoon sessions, was given over to discussion of two major programs proposed for the region, led by Dr. David King, Director of the RML and of the Academy's Division of Information Management. First he presented the proposed consumer health information project called CHORD (Consumer Health Out-Reach Development). This project will begin with information-gathering forums at several sites around the region, leading to a number of local collaborative projects over the next threeyears. These projects will include Resource Libraries, health sciences institutions, consumer organizations, and other healthcare organizations, with a goal of planning, implementing and assessing consumer health information outreach throughout the region.

The second major project discussed is the Electronic Document Delivery Research Project, a multi-year initiative designed to provide a systematic evaluation of different methods for implementing electronic document delivery in the region. The participating libraries will develop a joint research plan for investigating the technical, economic, legal and administrative aspects of different methods of digital document delivery. There are many issues to explore, ranging from copyright questions to the ability of borrowers to receive electronic documents.

Although Dr. King announced to the group that he would be leaving the Academy in early August, he is committed to these projects and wishes to be involved in their planning and implementation.

Further discussion centered upon other regional programs, including the consumer health subcontracts geared toward hospital and public libraries; potential technology forums which are planned for each year; additional public health outreach projects in Year 2; and cross-regional projects supported by NLM. Announcements of these funding opportunities will soon be going out. Look for them on the MARL list. In the meantime, as the major projects develop, we will be keeping you informed.

NEW RELEASE OF THE PUBMED TUTORIAL

This past July saw the release by the National Library of Medicine of a new version of the PubMed Tutorial, formerly titled "PubMed Online Training." As always, the tutorial is available from the PubMed sidebar.

Many users requested an Index, and this is now accessible through the tutorial sidebar. The tutorial now includes a section dealing with the Cubby and its functions. This feature is also available through the sidebar.

The tutorial has a new, fresh look with several new graphics and all new screenshots as Flash animations. The animations were also optimized to decrease download times as well as to decrease the need for scrolling as requested by users.

EFTS - THE ELECTRONIC FUND TRANSFER SYSTEM

From: New England Sounding Line, March-April 2001

The Electronic Fund Transfer System (EFTS) has been meeting the needs of health science libraries in the New England and Middle Atlantic regions since it became operational in January 1996. The University of Connecticut Health Center Library will continue to offer EFTS service and will be conducting a campaign to enlist new libraries in the coming months.

The NN/LM Mid-Continental Region (CO, KS, MO, NE, UT, WY) recently hosted EFTS presentations from the staff and will be joining the system this summer. The NN/LM South Central Region (TX, AR, LA, OK, NM) has been running an independent server for the last two years. As of May 1, 2001, these libraries were added to the database and became viable EFTS partners. Using EFTS, Harvard can now directly bill the University of Texas. Finally, the hardware and software that support EFTS have been enhanced. A new server running SQL will be used to process the increasing number of transactions and add more functionality to the system in the near future. The wish list includes online monthly statements, and web-based data collection. So collect your thoughts on EFTS and think about features you would like to have included in EFTS. The staff is preparing to survey its users to gather input for the next version of the application.

For those of you who are not EFTS participants and wish to learn more about it, information can be found at http://nnlmner.uchc.edu/efts/or by calling the University of Connecticut Health Center, (860) 679-4500.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE THIS PRINTOUT CAME FROM?

{For those of you who have Internet Explorer and would like to add a default copyright statement to any pages you print, we happily reproduce a tip from David Brennan, MLS, AHIP, which appeared in the April 2001, issue of the Pittsburgh Pulse.}

One of the nicer things about printing from the Web is the header/footer that appears on each page that gives you a notion of what the site is and the URL. But did you know that this is a function of your browser and can be changed to anything that you want? For example, I've set up a default header/footer that puts the copyright notice at the top of each page.

In Internet Explorer, select File and then Page Setup - note the current settings in case you want to go back to them. Then just enter the text you want to appear as the header or footer. This would be particularly useful for literature searches or full-text articles that you print for your users. Some advances copiers also have this feature and, when combined with memory settings for double-sided and stapled, can save many hours of labor throughout the year.

David uses the following wording as his header: "NOTICE: This material may be protected by copyright law (Title 17 US Code)." In his footer he states "Provided by Health Sciences Library, St. Francis Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA ( http://www.sfhs.edu/library)."
