Year Two by the Numbers

Barbara EpsteinDirector’s Musings

Barbara Epstein, Director

It’s hard to believe that we are almost halfway through our five-year contract. It’s been a whirlwind journey of learning about our region and building programs. You may be interested in a summary of our activities in Year 2 (May 2012 – April 2013).

We added 80 new affiliate members, bringing our total to 400 full members and 469 affiliates. Our MAR-L listserv has increased to more than 1,000 subscribers. We awarded 40 subcontracts for technology improvement, outreach, emergency preparedness, MedlinePlus Connect and the Group Licensing Initiative for hospital libraries. Twenty individuals and MLA chapters received professional development awards. These awards funded 132 training sessions and 46 exhibits.

We met with 2,900 visitors at 3 national and 33 state or local conferences. We offered presentations or CE courses to 321 conference attendees. And we did lots and lots and lots of training! For example:

  • 1,418 people attended 59 formal course offerings
  • 9 scheduled presentations arranged through regional groups reached 208 participants
  • Lunch with the RML, Boost Box, and TechTime sessions attracted 931 attendees
  • The four-part six-hour online course Running Your Hospital Library Like a Business was attended by approximately 50-60 people

We partnered with the NJ State Library, LibraryLinkNJ and the New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) to sponsor a day-long Disaster Summit with 120 attendees. And we sponsored a 2-day course on Research Data Management for 32 librarians from academic resource libraries throughout the region.

I am very proud of MAR’s accomplishments and of our hardworking and energetic staff. Watch for new programs and opportunities in Year Three!
