Announcement
The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) is accepting applications from MAR network members to provide training on the databases and web sites of the National Library of Medicine, technology or accessing quality health information on the internet.
Purpose
The purpose of the training award program is to improve health professionals’, librarians’ and the public’s skills in accessing electronic health information and to foster partnerships between health sciences librarians and health professionals, the public and other librarians. Library associations or consortia may apply as an organization if they have a tax identifier number.
The training sessions may be hands-on practice or demonstrations if facilities are not available.

Requirements
Full or affiliate MAR Network members are eligible to apply. The training must take place in the region and should be at least 4 hours in length. The activity must be open to other MAR network members.
The instructional activity should be focused on enhancing the knowledge and skills of health sciences librarians and/or health information intermediaries, such as health educators and health promoters. The knowledge and skills gained should enable the participants to better manage health information services and resources; to use technologies to enhance access to health information resources; or, in general, to improve their ability to contribute to the goals of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.
Some examples of activities that are eligible for funding are:
- Training health professionals, public library staffs, health sciences librarians, community-based organizations, health clinics or health consumers to search PubMed, MedlinePlus, Clinical Trials.gov, TOXNET (including LactMed, Household Products Database, ChemID Plus, Hazardous Substance Databank), ToxMystery, Toxtown, locating health services information and new or emerging technologies that can be used to access health information.
- Training unaffiliated health professionals or groups to use PubMed, TOXNET, WISER and other NLM databases or web sites and how to establish a partnership with a library to obtain full-text articles.
- Training unaffiliated health professionals or groups to use new technology, such as mobile technology, to access and store useful health information.
- Training staff of organizations that provide health information to consumers, including conducting the reference interview, understanding basic medical terminology, and obtaining full text of articles not available in their collection.
- Training groups of consumers to locate good sources of health information on the Internet.
Application Process
- Complete the award application.
- Applications accepted through March 30, 2007. Awards made until no more funds are available.
- Application should be made at least one month in advance of the program.
- All classes and course materials that are developed for the class are to be submitted to the National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC).
The MAR staff will acknowledge your application when received and will provide notification of awards within four weeks of the application deadline. Funding is not available for indirect costs.
Cost Instructions
Members can apply for up to $500 for each award. Multiple awards are available to a single institution.
The funds may be used to support:
- Fees and travel expenses of instructors and/or presenters
- Conference room fees and related facility expenses
- Equipment and other technology expenses related to conducting and/or recording the instructional activity
- Instructional handouts
- Mailings and other expenses related to promoting the activity

Application Review Process
Applications are reviewed by the Outreach Committee. Questions and comments may be sent to the applicant for clarification and revision of the proposal.
Evaluation Criteria
IDENTIFICATION OF NEED
Proposal describes why the instructional activity is needed and documents how the need was identified.

ARRANGEMENTS
Planning and arrangements for the instructional activity are described in sufficient detail to predict the likelihood of success for the event. Learning objectives and evaluation strategies for measuring the learning objectives are included.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS OF SPONSORING ORGANIZATION AND INSTRUCTORS
Documentation is provided about previous experience of the sponsoring organization to conduct instructional activities. Qualifications of the instructors and/or presenters are described sufficiently in the proposal.

Reporting Requirements
A final report must be submitted in electronic format within 30 days of completion of the project. Recipients also will be asked to write a short article about the event for potential publication in regional newsletter, blog or web site. Report must be submitted to rml at library.med.nyu.edu.
If this project results in a manuscript that will be submitted for publication, in accordance with the NIH Public Access Policy, project directors are asked to submit voluntarily to the NIH manuscript submission (NIHMS) system at PubMed Central (PMC) the author’s final manuscript upon acceptance for publication, resulting from activities and/or research supported in whole or in part with direct costs from this award. PMC is the NIH digital repository of full-text, peer-reviewed biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research journals. It is a publicly-accessible, permanent, and searchable electronic archive available on the Internet at PubMed Central.
