Online Training Development Awards

Announcement
The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) is accepting applications members to develop an online class on the databases and web sites of the National Library of Medicine, technology or accessing quality health information on the internet from MAR full and affiliate members.
Purpose
The purpose of developing an e-learning class is to improve health professionals’, librarians’ and the public’s skills in accessing electronic health information and to foster partnerships between health sciences librarians and health professionals, the public and other librarians. Library associations or consortia may apply as an organization if they have a tax identifier number.

Requirements
Full or affiliate MAR Network members are eligible to apply. The developed course will be given at least once by the applicant over the Adobe Connect online system, provided by the NN/LM MAR and should be at least 1 hour in length. After the course is developed, it should also be taught at least once over the Adobe Connect online system. The activity must be open to other MAR network members.
All courses should be based on a sounds needs assessment of regional information and information skills needs. A needs assessment could take the form of a survey on a listserv, structured conversations with members, review of Chapter or local library groups identified needs and goals as well as in conversation with the Regional Advisory Committee or RML staff.
The instructional activity should be focused on enhancing the knowledge and skills of health sciences librarians and/or health information intermediaries, such as health educators and health promoters. The knowledge and skills gained should enable the participants to better manage health information services and resources; to use technologies to enhance access to health information resources; or, in general, to improve their ability to contribute to the goals of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Assistance will be provided in the use of Adobe Connect.
Some examples of courses that could be developed and are eligible for funding are:
- Introduction to Bioinformatics
- Marketing a Consumer Health Library
- Conducting Research with a little “r”: Applied Research for the Practitioner
Application Process
- Complete the online award application.
- Applications accepted through March 30, 2007. Awards made until no more funds are available.
- All classes and course materials that are developed are to be submitted to the National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC).
The MAR staff will acknowledge your application when received and will provide notification of awards within four weeks of the application deadline. Funding is not available for indirect costs.
Cost Instructions
Members can apply for up to $800 for each award.
The funds may be used to support:
- Fees of course developers
- Instructional handouts
- Mailings and other expenses related to promoting the activity

Application Review Process
Applications are reviewed by the Outreach Committee. Questions and comments may be sent to the applicant for clarification and revision of the proposal.

IDENTIFICATION OF NEED
Application describes why the instructional activity is needed and documents how the need was identified.

ARRANGEMENTS
Application delineates the course developer’s ability to learn the subject matter and develop an interactive course on a topic of interest to members. Learning objectives and evaluation strategies for measuring the learning objectives are included.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS OF SPONSORING ORGANIZATION AND INSTRUCTORS
Documentation is provided about previous experience of the course developer to conduct instructional activities. Qualifications of the course developer are described sufficiently in the proposal.

Reporting Requirements
A final report must be submitted in electronic format within 30 days of completion of the project. Recipients also will be asked to write a short article about the event for potential publication in regional newsletter, blog or web site. Report must be submitted to rml@library.med.nyu.edu.
If this project results in a manuscript that will be submitted for publication, in accordance with the NIH Public Access Policy, project directors are asked to submit voluntarily to the NIH manuscript submission (NIHMS) system at PubMed Central (PMC) the author’s final manuscript upon acceptance for publication, resulting from activities and/or research supported in whole or in part with direct costs from this award. PMC is the NIH digital repository of full-text, peer-reviewed biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research journals. It is a publicly-accessible, permanent, and searchable electronic archive available on the Internet at PubMed Central.
