NNLM MAR Indirect Cost (IDC) Policy

Indirect Costs, also known as IDC, are allowed as a part of the budget for any NNLM MAR award over $15,000. The percentage applied must be a part of the proposed total budget for designated award amount and not added to the total budget.

What to consider in deciding whether to include indirect costs in your project budget:

Many institutions, mostly academic, require that a percent of any external award be designated for indirect costs. This money then goes to the institution to help defray the cost of general services such as buildings and libraries. Larger institutions have negotiated different IDC rates for federal grants and contracts and for different kinds of work.  If a library is in an institution that requires this of any external funding award, it is possible to include it in your budget.  Work with your business office or your sponsored programs office to determine the appropriate rate. RML staff are also available to answer questions.

Keep in mind that, because indirect cost must be a part of the total designated award amount, and not added on top of the total, if you choose to include IDC, you will have fewer dollars to spend on your project.
