Summary:  The Drug Information Portal gives users a gateway to selected drug information from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and other key U.S. government agencies.  Resources include consumer health and clinical NLM research resources; resources organized by audience and class; and other NIH and government resources such as the FDA, DEA, and CDC.  This session will provide an overview of the Portal, describe resources linked from the Portal, and demonstrate sample searches.

Upcoming ACRL Webcast – Academic Libraries and Community Engagement (4/23)

Join ACRL for the e-Learning webcast, “Out of the Library and Into the Community: Academic Libraries and Community Engagement,” on Wednesday, April 23 (1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Central).

Conversations about democracy, information access, and information distribution within communities continue to gain momentum in both academia and society as a whole. Academic librarians and LIS faculty can work with social justice issues in many ways. During this interactive webcast, learn how the speakers shape and bring to the forefront these issues via their teaching, scholarship, and work in local communities. Areas addressed include: community informatics, information literacy-focused service learning, and community outreach.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn how academic librarians influence our profession via their social justice-related work.
  • Develop an increased awareness of leadership and other roles for librarians in diverse communities.
  • Take away concrete ideas for high impact, collaborative social projects within the realm of library and information science.

Announcing 1st Ever America’s PrepareAthon!

America’s PrepareAthon! is a national and community-based campaign for action designed to increase emergency preparedness and resilience.  The overarching goal of the campaign is to increase the number of people who understand the hazards most relevant to their community, know the steps to take to protect themselves and their families and practice these steps.

America’s PrepareAthon! builds on existing preparedness campaigns by providing free downloadable materials including step-by-step implementation guides for workplaces, schools, houses of worship, community-based organizations, and the whole community to learn the steps people should take to be ready should a disaster occur.  Actions include signing up for mobile alerts and warnings, holding a preparedness discussion and conducting a drill so people are familiar with what to do beforehand.

Throughout the year, organizations can organize community days of action to encourage individuals to discuss, practice, and train for relevant hazards.  Twice a year, in the spring and fall, America’s PrepareAthon! will hold two national days of action.  The national day of action is April 30, 2014 and will focus on preparing organizations and individuals for tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, and wild fires.  The second national day of action year will be September 30, 2014.

PubMed for Librarians: Free Online Classes in May Open for Registration

Short on time but want to brush up on your PubMed skills?  Join the National Library of Medicine Training Center (NTC) for the free online class “PubMed for Librarians.”  Spaces still are available for the May 2014 series.

The PubMed for Librarians class is divided into five segments (90 minutes each).  Each segment is a synchronous online session that includes hands-on exercises and is worth 1.5 hours of MLA CE credit.  Participants can choose any or all of the 5 segments that interest them.

The segments are as follows:

May 1, 2014, 3 pm – 4:30 pm ET – Introduction to PubMed: Attend this class to learn about the difference between PubMed and MEDLINE, how to run a PubMed search, assess your search retrieval, analyze search details, customize with My NCBI, discover and employ three ways to search for a known citation, and use the Clinical Queries search tool.

May 5, 2014, 3 pm – 4:30 pm ET - MeSH (Medical Subject Headings): Attend this class to learn about the NLM Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) database. We discuss the 4 different types of MeSH terms and how searchers can benefit from using MesH to build a search. We also investigate the structure of the MeSH database and look at the components of a MeSH record.

May 7, 2014, 3 pm – 4:30 pm ET - Automatic Term Mapping (ATM): Attend this class to learn about Automatic Term Mapping (ATM), the process that maps keywords from your PubMed search to the controlled vocabulary of the MeSH database. Learn why searching with keywords in PubMed can be an effective approach to searching. We also look at the explosion feature, what is and is not included in Search Details, and how PubMed processes phrases.

May 12, 2014, 3 pm – 4:30 pm ET - Building and Refining Your Search: The class focuses on using some of the tools and features built into PubMed that are designed to help you search more effectively. We explore the Filters Sidebar and topic-specific subsets. We also use History, tools in the NLM Catalog, and the Index to build searches and explore topics.

May 14, 2014, 3 pm – 4:30 pm ET - Customization – My NCBI: Attend this class to learn about the advantages of creating a My NCBI account, managing and manipulating your My NCBI page content, identifying and differentiating available filters on PubMed’s filter sidebar, selecting and setting up to 15 filters, and creating a custom filter.

Mass Gatherings – Lessons Learned from the Boston Marathon

The University of North Carolina Gillings School Of Global Public Health hosted a webinar on February 27th, 2014, that provided an overview of the Boston Marathon, the public health concerns before the race, the communication and information needs after the bombing, and a summary of lessons learned. The Marathon was used as a case study example to assist others in preparing for public health concerns for future mass gatherings.  The free webinar has been added to the Biosurveillance Knowledge Repository, created by the North Carolina Preparedness and Emergency Response Research Center along with support materials for those who are interested in more in-depth information.
