The Association for Rural and Small Libraries currently offers three annual conference scholarships to promote the organization and the conference. They are the Dr. Bernard Vavrek Scholarship, the Founders Scholarship and the Ken Davenport Scholarship.

The Dr. Bernard Vavrek Scholarship will go to a current LIS student. It includes conference registration, hotel, $500 stipend and a free one-year membership in ARSL.

The Founders Scholarship and the Ken Davenport scholarship will go to a current library professional. They include conference registration, hotel, a $500 stipend and a free one-year membership in ARSL. The definition of a “Library Professional” is a library staff member working in a small and/or rural library. A degree or certification is not required.

Candidates do not need to be members of ARSL; however membership is encouraged.

The committee asks candidates for any scholarship to provide a briefly worded essay -”Why I Want To Go!” and a completed application form.

The winners should have not attended the ARSL conference before and will be required to write a short blog entry on the ARSL website to share their conference experience. Winners will also be invited to serve on the ARSL Scholarship Committee the following year.

The Conference Scholarship Committee selects winners based on a demonstration of need, demonstration of not only a desire to serve the small and rural community but an already established pattern of working within the community, willingness to network, share and aid in developing new networks to aid small and/or rural libraries and a willingness to share what they learn at the conference with those in their networking areas.

The Science of Safety in Healthcare offered by the Johns Hopkins University via “Coursera.org.”

This free online course will review basic principles of the science and culture of safety in healthcare. Taught by Dr. Peter Provost, “champion of patient safety” and a practicing critical care physicians and Cheryl Dennison Himmelfarb, Associate Professor, Johns Hopkins University.
The goals for this course are:

To provide definitions and context of patient safety concepts and terms using a systems approach.

Explore foundation-level content in the science of safety, patient safety culture, teamwork, patient-centered care, and leading change.

Introduce students to strategies for identifying and mitigating risks through the use of human factors science and quality improvement methods.

Learn about the importance of using data to guide their change efforts, and about the use of the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP)

The content of this course has been adapted from the intensive five-day Patient Safety Certificate Program offered by the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality as well as the Helene Fuld Fellows Program undergraduate course content from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

Description:  A major change for NIH-funded researchers in July 2013 is enforcement of mandatory compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy: funding will be withheld if publications arising from that award are not in compliance. ARL has now joined major sponsors Public Library of Science (PLOS), Wellcome Trust, and Google to launch the Accelerating Science Award Program (ASAP), which recognizes the use of scientific research, published through open access, that has led to innovations in any field that benefits society.

The goal of the ASAP program is to build awareness and encourage the use of open access scientific research and, through these stories, inspire greater support for open access.

“ARL’s sponsorship of ASAP signals deep support from the research library community for open access publishing and for the authors who publish in open access journals,” said Elliott Shore, ARL executive director. “Open access encourages the sharing of research and promotes innovation, activities that are central to the mission of higher education and scholarship.”

This new, innovative program recognizes individuals who have used, applied, or remixed scientific research—published through open access—to innovate and make a difference in science, medicine, business, technology, or society as a whole. Potential nominees include individuals, teams, or groups of collaborators—such as scientists, researchers, educators, social service workers, technology leaders, entrepreneurs, policy makers, patient advocates, public health workers, and students—who have used scientific research in transformative ways.

Three top awards of $30,000 each will be presented. The nomination period is open from May 1 to June 15, 2013. Winners will be announced in Washington, DC, in October 2013, at an Open Access Week kickoff event hosted by SPARC and the World Bank.

The ASAP program is sponsored by 24 global organizations that value the transformative impact of applying scientific research, published through open access, to extend the reach of science and medicine.

The Library at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-track Emerging Technologies Librarian. The successful candidate will be responsible for effective librarianship, scholarship, and service. Specific responsibilities will include:

Emerging Technologies: Identify, evaluate, and promote current and emerging best practices in the application of web and digital technologies; take a leading role in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of innovative web and digital services and resources to improve teaching and learning effectiveness at TCNJ Library (e.g., virtual reference, social media, mobile computing, content management systems, open source applications, interaction design). Foster initiatives by providing expertise and guidance for library staff as they integrate web and digital technologies into new services and operations. Work collaboratively with others on the design and support of the Library’s web site and web services using the most up-to-date web design and applications technology. Work collaboratively with librarians to develop, test, and implement instructional tools and other digital library initiatives. Promote and support usability testing and assessment of new and existing services.

Additional Responsibilities: As liaison to the Interactive Multimedia Program and possibly other subject areas, depending on library needs and applicant’s expertise, provide in-depth reference, subject-specific instruction, and collection development. Provide general reference and Library instruction. Some evening and weekend duties required. Plan and carry out a sustained and respectable body of scholarship as outlined in the Library Disciplinary Standards. Serve on Library and institutional committees.

Qualifications:

Required: Master’s degree accredited by the American Library Association and awarded by the time of appointment. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of web design and development, including applications and scripting languages, such as the Adobe suite, HTML5, or PHP. Working knowledge of a content management system, such as WordPress. Working knowledge of other library-related technologies, such as streaming media and digitization, and current programming languages, such as XML or SQL. Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Initiative, flexibility, and a strong service orientation essential.

Preferred: Experience creating enhanced services through implementation of innovative user-centered solutions, and integrating technologies such as social networking, virtual reference, mobile technologies, and other Web 2.0 applications. Advanced degree or equivalent experience in instructional technology, digital art, or interactive multimedia. Professional experience in an academic library setting. Reference and instruction experience.
