Digital Roles for Librarians During Disasters

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate’s Virtual Social Media Working Group recently published “Lessons Learned:  Social Media and Hurricane Sandy”.  This document identified and analyzed how social media were used in Sandy, and various gaps in technology, process, and/or policies.

One of the themes that emerged was organization of “big data”, including discovering information and resources, standardizing nomenclature, validating and vetting information.  In addition to big data, technology and tools emerged as an area where there are gaps.  Take a look at this report; you will find many places where your skill set can be utilized:
