An article in the New York Times discussed the implications of consolidation in the health care sector. The article reported, “An array of new economic realities, from reduced Medicare reimbursements to higher technology costs, is driving consolidation in health care and transforming the practice of medicine in Boise and other communities large and small. In one manifestation of the trend, hospitals, private equity firms and even health insurance companies are acquiring physician practices at a rapid rate. Today, about 39 percent of doctors nationwide are independent, down from 57 percent in 2000, according to estimates by Accenture, a consulting firm.”
The Economist reported on ‘The dream of the medical tricorder.” The article noted that “the hand-held diagnostic devices seen on ‘Star Trek’ are inspiring a host of medical add-ons for smartphones.”

Weill Cornell Medical College Library seeks a dynamic, energetic, knowledgeable and self-motivated librarian to provide leadership to the library and its partners for data services and resource discovery through the application of metadata and intellectual access activities. Reports to Associate Director, Resources Management
The data services/metadata librarian supports the creation, discovery of and access to the institution’s data and to the library’s digital and print content through consultation, metadata creation, analysis, enrichment, and maintenance according to local and national cataloging and metadata standards.
- Provide metadata consulting and project analysis services for faculty members and students in support of their teaching, research, and learning needs; prepare metadata profiles for implementation and/or conversion; and serve as a lead person for metadata related issues and problem solving.
- Provide expertise and leadership in developing data services and promoting these services to the institution.
- Develop and conduct outreach, workshops, and course-related instruction to support data analysis, metadata creation and data curation.
- Collaborate with health and life sciences librarians at Cornell University and Hunter College to further e-science initiatives.
- Assist in the development of a collection of resources and data sets appropriate to WCMC and the Clinical Translation Science Center.
- Advise on policies, standards and workflows for acquisition, description, access, and preservation of print and digital information. Perform original cataloging as required.
- Supervise .25 FTE copy-cataloger.
- Graduate degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution or the completion of significant coursework towards the degree.
- Advanced degree in basic sciences and/or significant biomedical background preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated expertise in the use of numeric data resources and an understanding of the application of numeric data in biomedical sciences.
- Knowledge and experience with metadata and cataloging standards and schema such as Dublin Core, METS, MODS, AACR2, RDA, MeSH, and NLM classification.
- Experience with statistical software (SPSS, SAS, STATA), and/or with GIS software such as ArcGIS and ArcView preferred.
- Excellent technical, written and verbal communication skills and teaching/presentation skills.
- Able to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Demonstrated initiative, the ability to manage multiple projects and a commitment to professional development.

The University at Buffalo Libraries seek a creative, energetic professional who is service-oriented and forward-thinking for the position of Medical Education Services Librarian and Liaison to the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in the Health Sciences Library. This is an open-rank 12-month tenure-track faculty appointment in an academic research-oriented environment. This position will be filled at the Senior Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian level depending on the candidate’s experience and record of research, scholarship and professional service. Applicants for the Senior Assistant Librarian position must demonstrate a beginning research trajectory and the potential to excel in research, scholarship and professional service. Applicants for the Associate Librarian are expected to have a record of research, scholarly publications and professional service appropriate to this rank. Applicants for either rank must possess the ability to meet the University at Buffalo’s promotion and tenure standards in librarianship, research, service and outreach.
The Health Sciences Library serves the academic, clinical and research information resource needs of the university’s schools of Dental Medicine, Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and Public Health & Health Professions. The Health Sciences Library also serves as a resource library for Western New York in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The University is at the beginning of a multi-year strategic initiative to move its medical school to a new urban center campus adjacent to three of the area’s largest teaching hospitals and other UB-affiliated research centers, providing exciting new opportunities for innovative library resources and services.
As the Medical Education Services Librarian for the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, the incumbent will have responsibility for supporting faculty and students in the School’s full range of education programs leading to undergraduate and master degrees in the biomedical sciences and medical technology, the four-year MD degree program, the PhD and post-doctorate programs in the biomedical sciences and graduate (residency) physician training programs.
As the Liaison to the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, the incumbent will be responsible for providing in-depth reference and research consultation services for users in this health sciences community; actively engaging with faculty in the School to integrate library resources and information literacy competencies into courses, curricula and programs; evaluating and selecting print and electronic resources that support the research and academic instruction of the School; creating, designing, presenting and assessing instruction to meet the needs of students and faculty; and understanding and implementing emerging trends in health sciences librarianship, evidence-based practice, scholarly communication, data management and new technologies. This faculty position is a key member of the Health Sciences Library’s Reference and Education Services team and reports to the Associate Director of the Health Sciences Library.
The incumbent will be expected to actively participate in library and university committees, task forces, special projects and initiatives and be professionally involved locally, regionally and nationally. The incumbent supports the Libraries’ mission which values open communication, respect for diverse perspectives and good working relationships.
• A Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library and information science
• One year of relevant experience in health sciences librarianship providing reference and library instruction services in an academic, medical, research or special library
• Strong and effective interpersonal, oral and written communication, analytical, and organizational skills
• Demonstrated experience using mobile devices, social networking and other forms of technology to deliver information services
• Advanced computer skills and the ability to learn new technologies quickly
• Strong service orientation in order to provide exceptional service to a diverse clientele
• Demonstrated commitment to working cooperatively and collaboratively with staff at all levels
• Creative capacity to foster and manage change
