Library Improvement Committee

Presented by Michelle Volesko Brewer, New Jersey Hospital Association, chair of the Library Improvement Committee:

  • Create a web-based survey  to find out
    1. what PALS and hospital libraries want to improve,
    2. what types of resources do they have and what do they do,
    3. what are they getting from state libraries and multi-cooperative type consortiums
  • Leadership competencies will be needed to adopt and sustain library improvement initiatives
  • Need to address institutional barriers to implementing library improvement
  • Training is always of interest
  • Technology  - group licensing on e-resources
  • EBM & librarians – at hospital level

Resource Sharing Committee

Presented by Robb Mackes, Schering-Plough Library of Science & Medicine, Union Hospital, Union, NJ, chair of the Resource Sharing Committee:

  • Establish central server to store ILL documents (reason: PDF files use a lot of space on a library server or e-mail) – RML is collaborating with METRO on this.
  • Training regarding electronic licensing agreements and copyright compliance in regard to ILL
  • Routing table education for DOCLINE
  • Establish low-cost ILL consortium, especially in PA & DE

Technology Committee

  • The library as “place” in the digital environment
  • Trends & use of technology within libraries in the RML - considering a survey about technology
  • Technological support for hospital libraries; conflict between hospital IT policy (security) and library mission (access to information)
  • Remote access – proxy servers & compliance with subscriptions
  • Using technology for collection development, e.g.: resource usage, ILL statistics
  • Creation of an RML-hosted test bed for new technologies - Wikis, blogs, RSS, etc

Outreach Committee

  • Create a substantial outreach project – will prioritize based on a needs assessment
  • Looking for needs assessment tools
  • Doing literature reviews
