Ohio was the 17th state to enter the union, joining on March 1, 1803. It is the 34th largest state in terms of land, at 44,828 square miles, but 7th in terms of population, with 11,353,140 residents counted in the 2000 census. 85.0% of Ohio residents are Caucasian, 11.5% African-American, 1.9% Hispanic, and other population groups including 24,486 American Indians, 132,633 Asians, and 2749 Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders. Columbus is the capital of Ohio. It also has the largest population of any city in Ohio, at 711,470. Other major Ohio cities include Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton, and Toledo.
