Michigan State Profile and Resources
|
Known as the "Great Lake State", Michigan has 56,954 square miles of land area and more shoreline than any other state except Alaska. Michigan is a unique state, divided into two peninsulas, and joined together by a suspension bridge that spans the Straits of Mackinac. The Upper Peninsula is rugged and sparsely populated. The Lower Peninsula is made up of small towns, large cities, and farms. Michigan borders Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Canada. Michigan enjoys the four seasons, and therefore attracts many outdoor-enthusiasts. Michigan's population of 10,079,985 is diverse. The population mix consists of 80.2% Caucasian, 14.2% African American, 3.3% Hispanic, 1.7% Asian and .6% Native American. There are twelve Native American tribes in Michigan consisting of the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi Indians. Michigan supports 28 four-year colleges and universities, including Michigan State University, the first land-grant university, and the University of Michigan, the first university established by any state. Michigan is also the first state to provide for the establishment of public libraries in its Constitution. |
