Indiana State Profile

Indiana is the 38th largest state in area, with a population of 6.1 million (2003). Its motto "The Crossroads of America" indicates its prime position in the Midwest crisscrossed by railroads and interstate highways and water routes with major ports. Agriculture and manufacturing are still the mainstay industries in Indiana, but are gradually being replaced by high tech, pharmaceutical, healthcare, insurance and sports-related companies. The demographics of Indiana include a black minority of 8.2% and a growing Hispanic population of 3.2%. There are 92 counties in the state, Indianapolis is the capital.
