Illinois State Profile

Map image of the state of Illinois

Illinois, the "Land of Lincoln", is the 24th largest state with a land area of 56,400 square miles. It is bordered by Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin. The 2000 Census stated Illinois' population as 12,419,293 people. Of that number, 14.9% of the population identifies themselves as Black or African American, followed by 12.6% as Hispanic or Latino, 3.3% as Asian/Pacific Islanders and 0.1% as Native Americans. The growth in the Hispanic/Latino population accounts for nearly 2/3 of the overall increase in Illinois's population. The population of the Chicago suburbs, which include the counties of DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, Will and Cook, grew faster than the downstate communities and the city of Chicago. Currently, 42% of the population lives in the Chicago suburbs. Chicago, the largest city, has a population of 2,896,016 and represents 23% of the state's total population. Downstate Illinois accounts for 35% of the state's population.
