Iowa State Profile

Known as the Hawkeye State, Iowa was the 29th state admitted to the Union in 1846. It is bordered by two major rivers - the Missouri to the west and the Mississippi to the east. Agriculture is a mainstay of the Iowa economy. Iowa ranks first in the nation in corn and soybean production and raises 28% of all U.S. pork. It produces 25% of the country's ethanol and is second in wind energy production. Iowa is 55,869 square miles (25th in the nation), 86% of which is farmland. Per the 2010 Census, the population of Iowa is 3,046,857, making it 30th in the country. This is a 4.1% increase since 2000. Its capital is Des Moines.
