The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) launched the Genetics Home Reference (GHR) Web site on April 25, 2003 as a new consumer health information resource focused on human genetics. The creation of GHR coincided with the completion of the Human Genome Project, a 13-year international effort to map the entire human genome.

The National Library of Medicine recently released a mobile app that is intended to serve as the authoritative guide to NLM mobile resources. The app was created as an HTML 5 mobile Web site in support of the Library’s ongoing efforts to make our information broadly available. This week, the NLM’s Technical Bulletin had an item about mobile TOXNET access. For those of you who are not familiar with TOXNET, it is a set of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health and toxic releases. It falls under a larger group of database and services available from the NLM – the Specialized Information Services, or as they are more commonly known, SIS.

No, you are not imagining it. NLM has indeed made changes to the search box in PubMed and the two related databases, MeSH and NLM Catalog. An X replaces the Clear button. Links are moved from above to below the search box. Advanced Search is now just Advanced. Also, the Advanced Search Box now allows one to scroll through all of the entries instead of only seeing the first few terms.

PubMed® (PubMed.gov) has updated several features
- Clinical Queries: One search on this updated page gives results across Clinical Study Categories, Systematic Reviews AND Medical Genetics
- Send to E-mail: Abstract Format now defaults to NOT including MeSH information
- Advanced Search page is cleaner
- Discover Ads, those boxes in the right hand column, are also cleaner and allow one to minimize the box
- My NCBI allows sign ins to Partner Organizations’ Accounts

- StopWords: Even if a Stopword is in the Title, it cannot be used as a search term

NLM heard your requests! Search results may now be customized and saved using My NCBI. Sign into My NCBI, click on PubMed Preferences, and then Result Display Settings. Set for Summary or Abstract (non-text format), the number of items viewed per page, and the default sort. Every time you sign into My NCBI, those settings will be active.
