U of M Health Sciences Libraries Host Disability Sensitivity Session

As part of our project, Creating Health Information Connections for Persons with Disabilities, funded by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region, the staff members of the University of Michigan (U of M) Health Sciences Libraries attended one of two Disability Sensitivity Sessions presented by representatives of the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living, our partner and collaborator in the project. On a snowy Monday, January 14, 2008, two intrepid GMR librarians braved the elements to come to Traverse City, Michigan, for a day of MLA credit workshops. Holly Burt began the day presenting Making the Most of PubMed and after lunch, Jacqueline Leskovec shared Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at your Library. Outreach started with a bang on January 2, 2008, as Ulrike Dieterle, University of Wisconsin-Madison Ebling Library’s Outreach Coordinator, ushered in the new year by providing an Information Resources Workshop for hospital health educators from 12 Wisconsin counties at their member Education Round Table meeting. While most of the participants were onsite at the RWHC Sauk City facility, some joined in via distance technologies as well. (more…)

The Minnesota Library Association’s 2007 meeting, All the World’s a Stage, was held October 24-26 in Mankato, MN. My Health Minnesota → Go Local was included in the meeting with an exhibit and a presentation, Health Information Takes Center Stage: My Health Minnesota → Go Local, by Karla Block. The conference provided a great opportunity to share Go Local, along with other wonderful NLM resources, with librarians and library staff throughout the state.

The Iowa State Fair attracts about a million visitors annually for an 11-day event every August in Des Moines, Iowa. Because the State Fair draws such large crowds, I thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase MedlinePlus® and other National Library of Medicine (NLM) web site products that are available at no charge from any Internet connected computer. So, the State Library of Iowa applied for and received a $1,500 Exhibit Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region (NN/LM GMR). (more…)
