Taubman librarians Merle Rosenzweig and Agnes Thorne at Health and Wellness Fair displayOn Wednesday, April 14, 2010, two staff of the Taubman Health Sciences Library manned a table at the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School Health & Wellness Fair. This is the second year that we took part in the fair. We handed out brochures on health information resources from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health as well as information about our library. We also had one of our laptop computers set up to provide live demonstrations of MedlinePlus and other relevant resources.

We did topic searches on health issues suggested by the attendees. Many of theses attendees had previously asked their doctors for more information about these conditions with little success but were able to find important information about their symptoms, i.e. Burning Mouth Syndrome and finger pain upon urination, through a quick MedlinePlus search.

A Message from the RML Director: Spring 2010

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Springtime in the Midwest is always a surprise, as if winter will become permanent rather than an attention-grabbing phase of the annual cycle. The cold and the dark recede; still we cling stubbornly to our coats, scarves, and gloves, just in case.

The chilly climate continues to be an apt metaphor for the programmatic chill of current economic conditions on our libraries and home institutions. At the same time, new ideas, new partnerships, and bold decisions encourage focus and allow for growth in our priorities.

Consortial licensing of e-journals, e-books, and databases has potential to reduce subscription cost and improve purchasing efficiency for the GMR membership. The E-Licensing Working Group of the GMR Regional Advisory Council (RAC) continues to work with the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (formerly the Michigan Library Consortium) on identifying group purchasing opportunities. The E-Licensing Working Group drafted a member survey that will be distributed in April to gather feedback on participation and interest in the various packages. (more…)
