Hurricane Information Abounds

With the hurricane season’s dynamic reminder of nature’s power comes an explosion of information on hurricanes.  The Specialized Information Services (SIS) branch of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has added a new section on Hurricanes to their Environmental Health and Toxicology section.  Visit: Hurricanes: Links to Health Information Including Toxicology and Environmental Health at http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/enviro/hurricane.html

This new resource links to HHS.Gov: Hurricanes,  to consumer health information at MedlinePlus: Hurricanes,  and to the NLM Disaster Information Management Research Center at http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/dimrc.html. Other resources include FEMA: Hurricane, the Department of Homeland Security and even CDC: Hurricanes under their Emergency Preparedness & Response section.

I was amazed to find just how much is available - and how quickly. For example, for information specifically on Gustav, visit the Hurricane Information Center at http://gustav08.ning.com/ which includes a blog and a link to the Hurricane Information Center Wiki. Even the USGS entered the act with their Natural Hazards - Hurricanes and the USDA offers A Consumer’s Guide to Food Safety: Severe Storms and Hurricanes; not to mention the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): Hurricane Information and even Google: Hurricane Gustav .

However, for the meteorologist in me, my favorite link has to be NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center with its great pictures and links to the other National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) resources. The Internet truly is an amazing tool!

I found this site today via a feed I was reading: http://www.stormpulse.com/. It’s amazing what is out there these days to track potential disasters.
