On Saturday, February 2, 2008, the University of Michigan Health Sciences Libraries took part in an annual community outreach event called Give Kids a Smile. Merle Rosenzweig, Nancy Allee, and Carol Shannon represented the Health Sciences Libraries at this activity, which was held at the University of Michigan Dental School. They sat at a table with colorful, child-appropriate handouts and a PowerPoint presentation on good oral hygiene couched in child-friendly language and accompanied by appealing cartoons. They also handed out MedlinePlus® pens as well as information on sensible nutrition and effective toothbrushing habits. Registration, which started at 9 a.m. was limited to the first 100 children, ages 5-12.

The registrants were provided with free tooth cleaning, simple fillings, x-rays, and sealants. The children also received a free oral health kit containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and information on maintaining good oral hygiene and healthy teeth.

This event was sponsored by the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, the Michigan Dental Association, the Washtenaw County Dental Society, and the Colgate-Palmolive Company.
