The Road Not Often Taken

GMR Blue Chris Allen, MSLS, AHIP
Munson Community Health Library
Traverse City, MI

On a snowy Monday, January 14, 2008, two intrepid GMR librarians braved the elements to come to Traverse City, Michigan, for a day of MLA credit workshops. Holly Burt began the day presenting Making the Most of PubMed and after lunch, Jacqueline Leskovec shared Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at your Library. This kind of training is a free service offered to members by the NN/LM GMR!Organized by the staff at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, these classes were held in the computer training room at Northwestern Michigan College Osterlin Library. Fourteen attendees came from medical, academic and public libraries.

Traverse City is located in Northwest Michigan, three hours north of Grand Rapids and five hours northwest of Detroit. While a beautiful pastoral and rural setting, our remote location makes it difficult to attend library continuing education opportunities that are readily available downstate. Having the trainers from the GMR visit us in Traverse City was beneficial, not only for the staff of Munson Medical Center, but for other local librarians from different types of libraries. This training day also gave us a rare opportunity to network with our colleagues from different fields.

Thank you to Holly and Jacqueline for your efforts and expertise. We hope you return again, soon!
