Taking Technology on the Road

GMR Blue By Mary J. Markland, MA, AHIP

I work in a small office without an on-site library or technical support. I had to borrow equipment from the other departments in my building for conference calls, scanning and teaching. I requested equipment in my Technology Improvement Award application that would allow me to be more independent and be able to take “my show” on the road whenever I wanted.

I requested a Dell Axim with accessories, a color laserjet printer, a digital speaker phone, a 19” LCD monitor with a swivel base, a scanner, a multimedia projector, Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0, a flash drive, a USB hub, a hard drive backup and a battery backup power supply.

My life is so much easier and efficient with these items. I love being able to use color in my teaching materials. I can take my projector and go on the road whenever I want. Having a Dell Axim has allowed me to expand my PDA curriculum. I also enjoy the comfort of having regular backups and knowing that my computer is safe from abrupt power interruptions. I especially love my speakerphone. No more stiff necks, and it came with caller ID and programmable buttons!

I would encourage people to apply for a Technology Improvement Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The application process is very simple and Bryan Vogh, the technology coordinator, is available to give you advice. It’s amazing what you can do with $4,900.

This project was funded by the National Library of Medicine under a contract NO1-LM-6-3523 with the University of Illinois at Chicago Library of the Health Sciences.
