Excitement and enthusiasm were in the air at the Rapid City Rushmore Plaza for the South Dakota Library Association (SDLA) Annual Conference 2006. The local arrangements committee did a wonderful job in preparing for the conference that had a fitting theme, “Librarians in Action”. Many attendees commented that this was the best conference they had ever attended.
Exhibiting for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region (NN/LM-GMR) at SDLA was a very gratifying experience in so many ways. It was a pleasure to show the South Dakota librarians from libraries both big and small the reliable resources available to them and to listen to the stories from librarians who have used NLM databases to help patrons within their communities or students at their schools. I heard from numerous librarians how thankful they are for MedlinePlus and how they refer their patrons to MedlinePlus with confidence. One librarian said she always has MedlinePlus brochures available at the circulation desk.
School librarians were particularly impressed with demonstrations of ToxTown. One school librarian commented that she had a class project in mind for her students to use ToxTown. At the end of the conference I felt good about how many people had been reached and educated on the resources available to them without cost and pleased by the sincere comments received from librarians from all over the state of South Dakota on how much they appreciate the availability of NLM products, databases, and services.
This project has been funded in whole or in part with federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, under Contract No. NO1-LM-6-3503.
