Black History Month and Health

The Office of Minority Health has numerous resources for Black History Month!

The resources include a profile of African Americans health, statistics by disease, leading causes of death and other health concerns.  They also has a history of Black History Month, a timeline of African American Pioneers in health care and other African American “firsts.”

The National Library of Medicine has the online exhibit “Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries. African Americans in Civil War Medicine.”  This exhibit, “looks at the men and women who served as surgeons and nurses and how their work as medical providers challenged the prescribed notions of race and gender.”  Visit the exhibition: http://1.usa.gov/1mJgPNy
