Need help. Something is going with my 12 yo daughter. She seems to be spending a lot of time on facebook communicating with others and we have no idea what is happening. She is a great at school and has many friends but in the last month, she sometimes sad after being on facebook and in other cases she doesn’t want to eat. Her performance at school is also degrading. Any idea what can we do? We tried talking with her but she says nothing and we tried to talk to school counselor but it did not help as well.

Patricia, take it from an “experienced” mom, you are so right in looking to watch what your children are doing on facebook. My daughter joined facebook two years ago when she was 12. Within few months we learned from one of her friend’s mom that there were threats and one of the kids in their class decided to leave to another school. I then started to look around for a way to know what is going on with my daughter and found a couple of solutions. There is software that you can install called NetNanny(www.netnanny,com) and it filters what your kids are doing online but when it comes to facebook, it will only filter what your kid is watching and cannot “see” things that your kid is not accessing. Also, if your kid accesses facebook from a smartphone or a different device, you will not know about that. There’s also a service that requires no installs or downloads that monitors your child’s facebook all the time regardless of what they use to access which I thought was great and I am using. It is called pgguard(www.pgguard.com). I hope that helps.
